My Friend bought back his highschool car today!!
My Friend bought back his highschool car today!!
I know its a chevy, but the story is awesome. Can't beleive it happened to someone i know...
One of my best friends sold his highschool car, a 1966 Chevelle about 20 years ago, right about the time his wife got pregnant with their 2nd Son.
A divorce, and 2 grown kids later, he's been back into classic cars since shortly after I met him 8 years ago (i like to think i have that influence on people :-) ).
A 69 Chevelle, restored from basket case & sold cause he decided he really wanted a 66. a 67 Short Wide Box Project truck for him & His son, still in progress... A 68 Short Wide box Show truck... Sold... and finnaly after years of searching and dreaming for his first car, he bought another 66 chevelle about 3 years ago has been working on and enjoying the heck out of it..
But today was THE day... on a total freak occurance- came across an ad on craigslist- JUST POSTED- a 66 chevelle with certain features that caught his eye.... Some calls to the number added to the question, could it be his car? Was priced too cheap and the guy already had offers requesting he hold it. My friend Said he had cash in hand if it were the RIGHT car.... guy said ok, come on out.
Drove about 40 miles out to check it out... sure enough, its his old car- no question about it. Car has been painted a different color (nice job), seat covers have been redone- the only downside is the top end of engine is disassembled and has been that way for awhile engine may be seized, and thats how its sat- passed between about 4 owners garages. Almost no miles on it since he sold it. The tires HE BOUGHT before selling it still have their nubbies on them, and the stuff he put in the trunk for the next owner is still in the same boxes with his name & address on them!
Its like a time capsule.
He bought it back for only $1k more than he sold it for... Not a bad price to pay for 20 years storage & a new paintjob & interior!
teaser photo of me pulling it across an intersection to the car trailer with the wifes subaru. LOL

anyway... He'll have it home tomorrow and start plotting its return to the road. I'll get some better pics then. I've been hearing about this car since literally the moment he & i met, so i'm so glad that he finnaly manage to get it.

Its a 66 malibu, SuperT10 4spd, 12bolt, 283 (that my friend built in highschool).
The car is not perfect, but its super solid- rust free that we can tell- and the paintjob looks to be very decent- a quick cut and buff and it'll likely look like new (it should cause it basically is) Its obviously been stored inside all these years.
What a trip. I'll try and get him to let me scan a couple pics he had of it from when he first owned it.

Maybe your friend should buy some lottery tickets while he's running that kind of luck
.
I hope he can save the engine and have more or less the complete car he once owned.
Thanks for sharing the story with us.

Holy #&@)!
He did much better than I did - I never let go of my high school Chevelle, but I wasn't always able to store it indoors, so it'll cost me a lot more than $1,000 to get it back in shape!

Great story. I sold my '71 Cutlass high school car back in '89, I wanted a truck to haul around my atv.
Last year I found an old registration for it in a box in the basement, I tried to run the number on the odd chance it was still on the road somewhere, but the only places that showed 'hits' wanted $50 for the report. I figured I'm not gonna blow $50 to have it come back as 'scrapped'.
I still wonder if I should have tried it before I bought my convertible this summer......

Ya.. i am NOT going to be searching for my high school car anytime soon
My first car was a 1977 Datsun B-210 Hatchback.. with the Honeycomb hub caps.. I sent it to the scrapper before I left HS.. I then took over driving my brothers 1981 Datsun B-310 Hatchback.. till the axle shaft came unbolted and left a nice hole in the transmission.. I am sure it got fixed.. but I am not going to look for it..
My next car may be fun to have but I am not going to go looking for .. a 1976 Buick Skyhawk.. had the 231 V6 in it.. great engine.. had cracks in the frame near the A Arms for the front suspension.. I sold the engine..and included the rest of the car for the same price. (Yes I informed the buyer of the cracked frame)..

Just thought I'd throw out an update one this...
We both went to SEMA and were gone all last week, but before he left on monday, spent a few hours on the car and got the motor running. bad starter was all- He'll be building a new motor anyway- but getting that one running is just another cherry on top.
He ordered a front suspension rebuilt kit, & front disk conversion stuff before we left- he'll have it roadworthy again in a few weeks at the rate he's going!
We got back saturday night, and he's been going at it with a clay bar & buffer- i walked over this morning before work, and the paint looks awesome!

A friend of mine got his back after 18 yrs, even though it was actually his college car. It is a '69 Mercury Cyclone 428 SCJ, one of 13 made. I think he paid 3x what he paid for it. The car was a time capsule. The guy bought it and did nothing to it, maybe a thousand more miles on it than when it was sold. The guy relocated it from LI to PA. Once in PA it was registered from 6 mos & then off the road. If he didn't register it for those couple months it would have been lost forever.
