Midwest Blizzard
Hope you guys in the Midwest are doing ok.
We have the essentials stocked up...currently we have electricity, food and beer. Check.
There is a LOT of snow out there, and its best friend the wind are having a party.
I can't open the front door, its drifted up to the windows of our home. The patio has drifted waist deep I'd say. I don't know the official depth, but I can't see the wheels on my pick up.
I should be done shoveling by Easter

Food and beer should be seperate categories. You can get nutrition from beer, but not alcohol from food.If you can only have one,go for the beer! I just called home a while ago, there is the most snow in 30 years or so,and more coming down, followed by another storm.Glad I am not there, and couldn't get there if I tried! What a mess! I suppose it will be there waiting for me... ---bil

We're having a BLAST here in Chicago!!!!
I left for work @ 9pm.....roads were FILLED with snow, and next to no cars on the road. Now to me, that was AWESOME because I got to drive like a nut legally Some sections by my house were pretty nasty, and I made it all the way to work only to misjudge the entrance by 3 feet because of the snow banks hiding it. I ended up stuck up on a curb. Thankfully the snow plow guy was right there to push me off.
Every 45 minutes I've been shoveling snow off 14 of our 15 foot wide satellite dishes that catch everything from the birds in the sky that we supply all of the Chicago and northern IL markets with. If we go down, all of Chicago goes down. (Master Headend/Feed) So we're stuck here buried in 4 feet up to the walls in some spots from the drifts. Our plows haven't been back since 9pm when I got here.
One of my coworkers tried to leave at 1am.....he made it 100 yards.....got stuck, and called us to come get him. LOL We had to tow him back to the parking lot. So 3 of us are here til maybe tomorrow afternoon when they plow us out. Some of our shift replacements live 50 miles away, so I might not even make it home Wednesday at all. Who knows.
Travel bans are in effect in several counties around Chicago issued by the Sheriffs and Police. Too many idiots stuck and calling 911 and abandoning their vehicles in busy streets with no visibility. Easy targets for people who plow right into them.
That's me sweeping the dishes off waaaaay back there.

Well I'm one of the idiots that thought I could make it to work at 3:30 am. Now my truck is stuck in a ditch 3/4 of mile down the road. The weather is very deadly right now I can see how a person could get very disoriented very quickly in these white out conditions. I'm lucky to made it home on foot.
The drifts are just huge nothing I've seen in the last 30 or so years.
Stay home if your in this blizzard nothings worth going out in this weather.

We have a lot of ice this morning. Got the freezing rain/sleet last evening and into the night. Fortunately, it was around 38 degrees this morning, so it was melting. I threw salt out in the drive between the vehicles this morning so I could get the car cleaned off without falling and busting my a$$! It didn't help a whole lot. Tried to keep one foot over in the grass where it was just crunchy snow, for traction. That worked. There were a few places you could see pavement on our street, but not many.
The wind is really blowin out here though. We're supposed to get the snow and blowing today. Temp's are dropping already. It's ugly. I feel bad for you all in Illinois and Missouri..... you all stay safe and indoors if you can.

20" and still coming, here!
4' x 6' drift between my car and garage, with drifts all around!
4' at the drive end, from the plow! [thanks!]
Gotta get at it - temps to -10 tonight!
If I live through this one, it' be my 3rd, '67, '79, and now, but we were overdue!

Wow that is unbelievable. I did not know the midwest was getting hammered that bad. Aces, nice picture, hope you're not stuck there for a long time.
We've had about 38" last month and a bad ice storm yesterday into today. Everything is shut down here as well as the roads are like a skating rink. They keep putting down salt, but it's raining too hard and it just refreezes. Looks like I picked the wrong time to sell my pickup! Be safe everyone.

In Southeast Michigan/Southern Ontario we seemed to miss a big chunk of it. It sounded like freezing rain which kept the snow totals down a bit. The neighbors were having a hard time getting out of the driveway. There was some drifting, but not as bad as I thought it would be.
Thanks for letting me use the Jeep today Jen!

Col. reading your other post about the storms on the driest continent, hope you all survive and come through it. Flash flooding can be devastating in a mostly dry geographic area. Hunker up and stay put, good luck.

Wowzers this is insane!! I have been shoveling and snow-blowing for 4 hours. The snow plowers haven't even plowed my street or should I say they haven't come back to plow it, since early this morning. When I go to work in a few hours, I hope people will stay inside their houses. I will not have sympathy or empathy for stranded motorist today, because they were going to the local Stop N Go to get lottery tickets and cigarettes!

Only got about 15" of snow here near Flint but it's still snowing and the wind is howling. I spent 2 hours plowing my 600' drive so the wife could go to work. It's all filled back in now. The main roads are fine but she won't be able to get back in the drive, I had to give up. I might try again later but told her to plan on staying the night with her niece that lives on a main road.

Yeow...
You northern guys are a tough breed for sure. I was complaining that it took 30 minutes to chisel out both of my cars from under 1/2 of ice... Of course soft dry snow would have been easier. Now the Caddy's doors are froze shut.
At least if there is a power outage, the beer can be kept cold outside!

There is bright side to all of this you know....our kids will be able to tell our grandkids that they had to walk/drive in snow that was 10' high, up hill both ways in only sandles and a scarf.

Woke up to 15 inches of snow and my nieghbor stuck in his driveway. He fell off the edge while plowing. I pulled him out and then plowed the 3 foot drifts out of my driveway. went to plow my parents drive at 10:30 and half of the roads were still impassable. They are reporting drifts up to 12 feet tall on the roads just outside of town. But on the up side work was called off today so I may sneak out to the garage and install my new fuel pressure gauge.

After viewing all the pictures and record breaking cold and snow, there's only thing to blame,..."global warming." It was 8 degrees here in Texas last night, with a wind chill of -6 degrees...yep, global warming.

Loving the pictures! Looks like the Midwest is getting all the snow we got here in the DC area last year :-) Here's some pics from 'Snowmaggeden' BaileysCrossroads, Virginia...5 minutes outside DC http://dclimo.dyndns.org:8069/shelli.../snowmaggeden/

On this side of the globe we've had 100deg+ days all week. 113deg on Tuesday. Hottest Sydney night in 38 years. At least we're doing our bit to validate the Global Warming situation. You guys really need to get it together. I blame the Kiwis for this. Concentrated methane from sheep farts blowing holes in the ozone layer above New Zealand has created the weird weather patterns we're seeing. They were probably behind last night's cyclone as well...and your blizzards We need to keep an eye on 'em

Ahh Michigan
1. If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Michigan .
2. If you're proud that your region makes the national news 96 nights each year because Pellston is the coldest spot in the nation, you might live in Michigan .
3. If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Michigan .
4. If you instinctively walk like a penguin for five months out of the year, you might live in Michigan .
5. If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't work there, you might live in Michigan .
6. If your dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in Michigan .
7. If you have worn shorts and a coat at the same time, you might live in Michigan .
8. If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Michigan .
9. If you have had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you might live in Michigan .
Part 2 - You know you're a true MICHIGANDER when . . .
1. "Vacation" means going up north on I-75.
2. You measure distance in hours.
3. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once.

6. You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings).
7. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.
8. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.
9. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.
10. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled
with snow.
11. You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction.
12. You can identify a southern or eastern accent.
13. Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your blue spruce.
14. You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age.
15. Down South to you means Ohio .
16. A brat is something you eat.
17. Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole barn.
18. You go out to fish fry every Friday.
19. Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.
20. You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.
21. You find 0 degrees "a little chilly."
22. You drink pop and bake with soda.
23. Your doctor tells you to drink Vernors and you know it's not medicine.
24. You can actually drink Vernors without coughing.
25. You know what a Yooper is.
26. You think owning a Honda is Un-American.
27. You know that UP is a place, not a direction.
28. You know it's possible to live in a thumb.
29. You understand that when visiting Detroit, the best thing to wear is a Kevlar vest.
30. You actually understand these jokes, and you forward them to all your Michigan friends . . . .
