Local update, Cash for Clunkers

Local update, Cash for Clunkers
OK... I didn't and still don't like the program. 'nuff said about that.
But I did discover something interesting. My local U-Pull-It is full of cash for clunker cars! Engines are toast, but everything else is available. I noticed lots of cars/trucks had the trannies pulled. S I asked them and found a working 200 metric or 700R would be $300, and that's one that they pulled and is on the shelf. Much cheaper if I pulled one myself. Late model interior parts, some of them pretty nice. Lots of 1980's and 1990's vintage stuff. Huh! I've got to do some brainstorming of what I might be able to use on my older projects that may be cheap at the moment due to the large inventory they have! Has anybody else found this in their local yards?

I once heard that NONE of the drivetrain was to be resellable from a CfC vehicle, but I hope I am wrong - the tranny and axle are not the 'polluting' parts!
I am hoping I can soon score a good auto dimming rearview mirror (w compass, lights, & temp) from a 'clunker'...
Need to start hitting the yards when the rain and cold ends!

There are mechanics on YouTube that are posting videos from this program. They have to drain the oil on each C4C car, refill it with some water and seize it up. Such a shame this program is as I saw quite a few cars on there that were too nice to be heading to the wreckers. The Ford dealers up here have a similar program with the cash for your 1996 and older vehicle..

Another government fraud. The powers that be say they are for helping people in need but they pay people to turn in a number of perfectly good cars and then destroy them when so many people could have used a vehicle to get around. I know of 3 people who need cars but can not afford to fix what they have or buy something dependable as many of these turned in vehicles still were.

BIG TIME JOKE !!!!![Mad](https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif)

For the almost 700,000 people who were part of this C4C program, did not realize (til after the fact), they are going to get TAXED on their $3500 or $4500 rebate!
I saw a very nice 1999 Aurora (atuobhan option too), with only 117,000 miles bite the dust!
I called the Chevy dealership where this Oldsmobile was, and was told over the phone, they could not sell any parts of this car.
The waste makes me puke!

Definately don't go check out the videos then. I watched a couple of them a while back and it made me sick and I had to stop.. One was a nice low mileage (60K mile) LT1 Caprice wagon I believe.. I didn't dare check for any Olds ones..
That was the argument the mechanics in the videos had. Lots of people who can't afford newer cars would have loved to have these and now they're all scrap.

I have heard that a LOT of those motors can be rebuild VERY easily. Most of the time a boil, a rebore and a crank turn is all it needs. guy (on a local Ford Forum) local to me picked up two of the bigger Ford Truck motors on the cheap, tore them down, and found all that was needed is a crank turned and new bearings. Dunno. As long as you can boil that liquid glass out of there, sounds like someone in governmental engineering missed something.

the Ford 300 six is a tough/relaible engine.

A lot of Grand Cherokees like my 1995 also bit the dust (not an Oldsmobile but still I hate seeing them go especially when they were rust free unlike mine hahaha)..
I plan to keep mine until she won't go no more.. Or won't pass the emission test.. Whatever comes first..

They aren't supposed to sell any parts of the motor, let alone the motor itself. If the yard sold it to them, they may get in trouble for it if they get caught.
I know the vins are garbage so you can't buy a c4c car and drop in a new motor and drive it.

And now, the most traded for vehicles (Toyota) are in a recall!!!!!!!!

I think it's a shame that America's youth will not experience the rump of a mildly cammed small block daily driver he could fix by himself. There was a certain feeling I would get just lisening to that motor work. Do you guys know what I mean. I built it, and it worked. I had a 69 Chevelle when I was 16. Nowadays kids have a Camry that sounds like a purring kitten. Pure Performance!
