The internet has been spotty for the last few hours, getting around 4mbps. So my wife in her infinite wisdom calls our provider and some guy in the Philippines has her running around the house checking our devices. I told her it was not our equipment problem, yet she spent the better part of an hour wasting her time following the directions of the idiot on the line with the end result of it's not our equipment. Like the title says, the internet is great until it's not. We are so dependent on it for so many things in our daily lives that we feel lost when it disappears. Hopefully our provider gets it fixed soon.
Operating @ 35.3% availability. It wouldn't do any good to troubleshoot since that's beyond scope; but, if it happens to me, I start command line TRACERT & PING to diagnose where the broken links are located. With TRACERT (MS-DOS) you can see where the signal falls off. Doesn't really do you any good other than you know where exactly the link is broken.
How did you do that? And what does that mean? Are you saying that it's only limping along at 30% capacity or that it's using only 30% of it's usable capacity?
As an example (only) if you open a COMMAND PROMPT (MS-DOS), your may be called 'Windows Terminal' and invoke the command "TRACERT" to let's say www.microsoft.com (as I did in this image below), you can see the routing your Internet packets take to get to www.microsoft.com. If along the "route" (e.g. TRACING ROUTE - TRACERT), the signal fails, you'll see where it stopped. Obviously, mine (below) makes it all the way to www.microsoft.com without issue(s).
Or, another example..how are things on the front-end IP interface working for www.classicoldsmobile.com today? Not all companies allow a PING or TRACERT to be invoked (responded)....which, unless you have an excellent/exceptional firewall, most have TRACERT & PING turned off because it "can" provide a vulnerability; but, the servers which host CO are 'open' (as you can see from my TRACERT to www.classicoldsmobile.com below).

35% of it's users have Internet access, 65% do not. Obviously, I can't state what the % represents since I don't know the N=size of the user base.
While Norms troubleshooting posts were educational, my point was how dependent we as a society have become on the internet and how tightly woven it is in our daily lives.

To corroborate your point:
I went ballistic Friday into a total meltdown due to the next door neighbor ripping the cable from the pole with a dump truck. (junction box on his property). He didn't tell me about it nor did he attempt to repair or call the cable company.
The most aggravating aspect of the outage was spending a couple hours troubleshooting my equipment and connections only to discover later that the main cable was disconnected.
Then, after scheduling a service call with the cable company, I tried to tether my smart phone to the PC and chased my tail for another 2 hours before I got it tethered so that I could watch my MLB Saturday game.
Literally ran off 3 buddies in the process who were appalled by my unhinged behavior.
I'd rather endure a colonoscopy without anesthesia before having to go through another ordeal like that again.
Agreed,
How dependent we as a society have become on the internet and how tightly woven it is in our daily lives.
It's sad but true ! I have to admit dependence on the internet ! I try to use it as a tool, for example before making my recent purchase of a new TV
I did most my research on the internet reading reviews, specs etc... then compared prices from major retailers and online dealers then I made only ONE trip to the store to actually compare sound and picture quality, this saved time, gas money and money money.
A few years back I bought a pre-owned rifle and could not figure out the take down, two minutes on You Tube and it was apart, the same for a shotgun I have that was made in 1915 found the secret to the take down procedure on You Tube !! Also found auto repair procedure that required removal of a hidden bolt with out the internet I would probably still be looking !! My wife does her grocery shopping online then goes to curb side pick up says it saves her time and she avoids the crowded isles. I know there are negative aspects but that is true of just about anything in life. and no internet no Classic Oldsmobile !! I may be one of those people that would go into meltdown with no net.
I think we will always have capacity, as long as we have electricity. They will always make a gizmo to connect something else. Are they smarter ?
Can you imagine saying: "I'll be go to hell".
Alexa pipes up: "Ralph, what is your starting point and I'll get you directions."
Can you imagine saying: "Dayum that was a dumb thing to do."
Siri pipes up: "Ralph, that not the first time this week. You have done this three times in four days, this week."
