internet connection issues

A couple weeks ago we changed over to Xfinity tv/ phone/ internet
new router
THREE wireless nets to choose from, only one of which will let me print to the house printer. *sigh*

I have not been able to upload to photobucket for a while

A couple weeks ago my laptop fell and now it has a line down the left side of the screen. Unrelated?

The first problem I noticed was that epay stopped letting me see my FOR SALE stuff... every OTHER feature worked, and at lunch at work I can see my epay for sale stuff.... weird intermittent issue, then became permanent.

Then google started dumping me at google.ae - arab emirates. Not cool. I finally got that ironed out tonite by submitting an error report and finding guidance for settings on the internet. The "three bars" of course, is the settings icon. Anyone would know that, right?

Removed CHROME and re-installed it. Not better.

So I got AVAST and ran that, it found some new malware
ran malwarebytes- been a while, it found a few

I was running spybot and AVG pretty much every night, and thought I was covered. I guess not.

opened Start - Run - Regedit and looked for spam words like "xxx" and "adv" and deleted all such registry keys.

Things are a little better now, opens to google, not google-arab-emirates, today I was able to load ONE pic to photobuck I think, but no more, and no video.

Suggestions appreciated. I am starting to think it all stems from the new house net connection and router. Ihave tried all three wireless hookups of course.

There are a number of factors to consider.
A few thoughts:
Home Network:
  • Never use the wireless router provided from the ISP. They are often junk and unreliable. I use Comcast as well and declined the wireless router just got the plain router plus I saved a few bucks a month. I only use mine as a "modem" connecting the Internet to my network.
  • If you abandon the ISP router, kill the wireless functions, turn off DHCP and open all the ports and have your personal router do the work.
  • Unable to print using one WLAN doesn't surprise me. Devices can typically only print on the same WLAN unless you have a really fancy printer that has a lot of management tools built in.
  • If you are using your wireless router and it is more than 3-4 years old, get a new one. I prefer Netgear but any name brand should function well. Another rule about wireless routers, if it costs <$50 dont bother, if you pay >$200 you are either getting screwed OR you are using a lot of uncommon features.
  • You mention that it is a new house and I have heard that when new service has been installed there can be occasional teething problems until everything gets normalized.

PC-centric causes:
Since you mention Avast and note other Microsoft-based items I assume this is Windows.
  • If you are running XP or Vista, get Win7 ASAP. Win8 is crap but if that's what you have, better than pre-Win7
  • You are doing the right thing by running utilities and have chosen decent ones. Keep doing what you are doing there. I like Avast better than AVG, Norton and MacAfee are bloatware and have unnecessary features.
  • Make sure you update your Spybot S&D before running if you are still using it.
  • Good rule: You should not run more than one AV platform at a time. In this case, more is not better.
  • Rerouting your home page is often caused by malware. A good suggestion is to avoid installing browser plugins and 'cute crap' on your PC. This is just an invitation for nasty stuff to get by. I always have my browser home page set to 'blank' (empty page) that way I always know if an intrusion was attempted.
  • I am not sure about your skill level but be very careful when messing with the registry. If you know what you are doing, ignore this statement.
It sounds like a rebuild might be a good idea, back it up, blow it away, build it up. When I ran MS products I always did a rebuild every 6 months or so if it needed it or not. I use Mac mainly now but I do use MS for work and also have WinXP and Win7 VM's on my iMac so the same rules apply there.
