Well, here in Oregon we can now have the option to pump our own gas or have an attendant do it. For as long as I can remember we've had attendants to pump our gas for us. So now that I'm standing there, I'm reading what's on the pump. Federal tax is a little over 18 cents a gallon and state taxes is a little over 38 cents a gallon. It got me thinking, how much variation is there between states for the amount of gas tax? What do you guys see on your state or local taxes? Obviously I juggled my phone taking the picture. But the price did catch my attention!
Wow. Obviously I love the 442 but at the same time...
Screw that. I just paid 3.42. Even that is insane. Electric vehicles will make it spike even more in my opinion.
I remember paying 31.9. Yes 31.9 cents per gallon.

I remember in 1962, gas wars would make the cheap Gulftane gas down to 13.9 cents a gallon. Farmers were bringing in 55 gallon barrels to fill for tractor fuel.
Here in Maryland they just finished raising our state gas tax again. It's currently 47 cents a gallon. We're sitting at $3.65 at the local Wawa or $3.52 at Sam's Club for 87 octane. 93 is over $4. Luckily, I live in southern Maryland and travel to Virginia quite a bit. It's $3.22 for 87 there.
And to think that when I got my license back in '85, we were complaining because gas went up to 75 cents a gallon.
Here in SC, $3.39 for 10% Ethanol, and anywhere from $4.19 to $4.29 for Ethanol Free.
I hold my nose and buy the Ethanol Free for all my 1996 and older cars. Since we moved here last year that's all they have been getting and it will stay that way. For my lawn equipment as well. E-Zero all the way.

No such thing as "ethanol free" in Maryland. Everything is 10%.The closest you get to that is buying diesel.
They actually TOOK it away 3 years later.
2 speeding tickets. The 1st was for doing 90 in a 45 zone. The 2nd was one week later for doing 127 in a 40 zone. The same lady cop for both tickets (ouch). They took it for a year and I handed my license over with a smile...I was leaving for boot camp the next week anyway and didn't need it.

Stylish maneuver, there. 127 in a 40; I know some roads where that is possible. A straight 4 lane divided with an abnormally low limit that should be 65, yeah, it's possible.
Actually I just re-read OP. I think the intent was to note not only that the price was really high and heavily overtaxed, but actually $4.42 per gallon, a fun little coincidence.
That is correct. And Oregon for the first time in my lifetime is allowing us to pump our own gas. I've been driving for 50 years so the state law that changed has been in place for a long time. Pumping my own gas put me in front of the gas pumps where I noticed the price, $4.42 and the taxes. It made me wonder if the price variance across the country was based on taxes or other things. I don't know about Canadian provinces but the prices across the states do vary considerably. I did not intend to create a post that would be controversial. John

Oregon, your posting brings back memories from 1993 the 1 and only time that I have been there. We stop at a gas station out in the sticks. My Father in-law went inside to prepaid and I started pumping gas. A island attendant came running over having a complete melt down over me pumping the gas. He was telling me that he could be fired and I could be arrested for putting the gas in the Motorhome because of some stupid state law that existed to protect Oregon jobs. Never been back since.
I never had that problem in Oregon when driving the 55 most would ask if I would pump my own if I wanted for fear of a scratch or dribbling fuel on the paint I was usually going to a show and the car was dressed to the nines, not so when returning from a varmint hunt in the pickup though....Tedd
Hah! Try buying gas in Canada. Last time I did the calculation, it cost about $9/gallon US for ethanol-free Chevron 94.
In Ontario, .52 cents is the tax on 1 liter of gasoline, yeah that's not a misprint, we take it dry here. 2 dollars a liter for premium gas so that puts us over 8 dollars a gallon for a comparison to the USA. It was also a long weekend this week (Labor day holiday), and guess what? the gas went up bigtime before the long weekend per norm, price gouging at its finest!! oh and if you want someone to pump your gas for you that station will cost you more.
Holy crap. No thank you. Nine dollars a gallon?? I ride a bike often already. I would rarely drive a car at that price period. Wow you guys are getting fleeced.
In OK it's a $.19/gallon tax. I always get the E10 gasoline for my daily drivers from Sam's Club (since it's cheaper than any other place in town). Of course, I only run 100% gasoline in my 71.
