Dyno tune session!!

I had the Olds tuned on a dyno today. Best numbers were 435hp at 5400, and 523 at 4200. This is the first time I have ever had the car on this style dyno (Edie-current instead of on rollers). I wanted to push that little blue button, but the bottle was almost empty. 😡. Started out with power at 360, 27 dyno pulls later it runs great.

Long time readers probably recall my mentioning my LS turbo buddies, this is their shop. While LS engines are brand “X”, these guys definitely know what they are doing. If anyone in readerland need LS engine help, or Holley tuning/custom work/ etc, call them

Wow you started at 360 hp and ended up at 435hp. Where was the 75hp hidng? 27 pulls plus tuning sounds like an all day job, but seems like it was worth it!

It was a all day tune. I had all the basic calibration info loaded in the Sniper, Adam smoothed out all the rough edges. He wasn’t happy until he found what the engine liked both lean and rich, too much timing verses too little, etc. I don’t know or understand a lot of what he did, the first few pulls resulted in some pretty big gains. After he got the basics straighten out, the improvements got smaller as he zeroed in on what the engine liked.

He also got all the software loaded and function for the 2step, progressive nitrous control, used a couple of the inputs to the handheld for nitrous bottle pressure and trans temp (complete with high and low limit warnings)

Im not very computer savvy, while I understood most of what he was doing, I don’t have the vocabulary or the hands on to make the computer do what I need it to do. Before all this virus crap started I had planned on taking a couple classes at Holley training center.

I did drag week in 2016 (got quickest Olds with a 11:56 average) but probably won’t compete again. I refuse to put a cage in the car, so I can’t run faster than 11:50. They do have a quick 32 class, but it took a 10:28 or better to make that class. I might ride with some of my really fast buddies, some of them run really low 8s.

That was a fantastic power increase! Congratulations on such a good build and on finding such an expert tuner.

If the eddy-current dyno didn't use rollers, how did it connect to your wheels? Did it bolt to the axle instead?

There are hats that kinda look like really deep rotors that bolt to the wheel. They are drilled for different bolt patterns. Then the hats bolt to the machines on either side of the car. The way it was explained to me is it obviously eliminates tire slip, and it can hold the axles from turning or limit how much they are allowed to turn. The machine has a 3500hp capacity, so far the stoutest car they have tuned has been 1900 hp.

another advantage is being able to program specified loads for tuning part throttle. Like I said, I know a little about the theory. If I had lots of money burning a hole in my pocket it would be interesting to dyno just the engine, chassis dyno with rollers, and edi current style. I would have to have a pretty big hole in my pocket!!!
