Do you watch NASCAR races?

I find my self watching maybe, three to five races a year. I've enjoyed it for many years but not so much anymore. Not sure why.

Sunday is the Southern 500, and with the weekend off, I'll watch it. They are advertising retro paint schemes. I can look forward to that. The few I've seen don't exactly take me back, but hey open mind..right?

Why not a retro race car weekend? Wouldn't that be cool. Shear fantasy, I know.

I don't live far from Texas Motor Speedway and took my son there every race for the first 10 years after it was built. I was a big fan growing up, but its just not fun anymore. I second bringing back the early cars. Similar to say the nostalgic drag weekends.

Your unintentional engineering pun amuses me, sir, this late at night, and that very fact (the cars splitting in half and other safety problems) is probably why it is not done.

I would love to see Street Legal Circle Track racing, and it would be wonderful to have it have leagues based on initial cost. Imagine a sub-20 thousand class, with only upgrades allowed being safety ones.

I quit watching several years ago. When they started making rules to cater to the fans it became a joke. They just can't understand that the reason for the fans in the first place was by what it already was. Then when they make exceptions to the rules if you were the right person. I will catch about half of a race each year just to listen to Waltrip on Fox.

I used to watch them more often several years ago than I do now. I am kind of like Eric I may catch one total race throughout the whole year. For one thing who's got time to sit for three or four or five hours?

You know the though of nostalgic nascar races has been mentioned in magazines. It stopped being fun after dale sr. died . The local clay track has a nostalgia series which is a riot to watch . Look at the nostalgia top fuelers they have a strong following and they are just about as unsafe as they where in the 70's. Hell even nostalgia rc car racing is in. I would love to see a nostalgia nascar series on tv.

Koda no disrepect here.I watched those guys. Like the king richard going 200 in a superbird never seen one split in half. The Cale's,Gant,Pearson,Wallace, Just to name a few of the late 60's early seventy's.Seen them barrel roll end over end fly off embankments. I don't recall a spit in half back then.Have i seen them after that yes.I was watching nascar when Fireball Roberts died in the early 60's. I started watching around 1962/63 As i recall the 62 ford galaxies real well and 62 chevy's, dodges, plymouths.I remember some 58 fords even in the early sixty's because some teams were on a shoe string. I don't watch much anymore maybe one race a year.

The Chicagoland Speedway is literally ten minutes from me. I quit going after the first 5 years or so. It's boring when you're there. There is no jumbotron to see replays of wrecks or to show a smooth move on replay somewhere on the track. On top of being a very boring track they put the race on a football Sunday. They used to race in July and it was really nice to get out on a Saturday night and stay out late and watch the race. Now it's sometimes cold and boring instead of just boring. Teevee brings a better and more detailed picture than you could ever hope to have at our local track.
I will watch the race just to see how they avoid showing 20,000 people in a place that holds 80,000.
Plus I like whatever they send for the opening flyover over my house.
The old cars are just so much better. At least there's some variation in speeds and skill with the old stuff. Now Pro stocks are all qualifying within a tenth of each other. No big wheelstands, nothing violent, all efficiency. Boooring!

Race finished 20 minutes ago ..

O.K. , it is 9:12 pm , Phoenix time .. 12 ;12 East Coast ..
Low downforce , EATS up tires , quirky Darlington . If anyone watched , the last 70 laps were as good as it has ever been in NASCAR . Harvick and Edwards , trying to catch Keselowski . Then a stupid caution for a partial spin from rookie Jeb Bush , THEN it was fresh tires snooze fest for the last 8 laps .. If it could have gone GREEN till the end , Kevin , Carl , and Brad would have ended up in some huge event in the last 3 laps ...
1. Edwards ; 2. Keselowski ; 3. Hamiln ; 4 Logano ; 5 Harvick . ALL of those guys were absolutely just wheelin for the last 100 laps ..
I'm spoiled . At the Phoenix race , we have 5 R.V. spots on the asphalt between the Safeway grocery store , and the Allison seats in turns 1+2 . The chase goes from 8 drivers to 4 drivers @ Homestead . There are approximately 40,000 people in in Motorhomes / and R.V. 's ..
Unfortunately , it will never be the same .. Sadly , just like Drag Racing / NHRA .
Between money - sponsors - and T.V. time //// Individuals that have NEVER run in the SPORT , are giving us what THEY feel the sport should be about ..
Make those guys run STOCK sheetmetal , STOCK block engines , and make them handle like we saw tonight .. It would be a LOT MORE INTERESTING .
My .02 .. I'm going swimming .. JT

I had a hard time watching after Dale Sr. died. Once they let the Toyotas into NASCAR, I was done with it forever. Jap cars don't belong in North American Stock Car Racing.

You two are right, perhaps they should only limit it to stock car versions of cars made in America. Should there be a percentage parts made in USA cutoff?

They lost me with the restrictor plate races. They are soooooo boring. It's like watching rush hour traffic on a 3 lane interstate. First the left lane is moving up, then the right lane, then the center, but NO ONE can get away. It's just one huge traffic jam. Then the idiot announcers come on and say so and so "has a real rocket ship", yet he can't pull away either. Ridiculous! They have gone to such great lengths to make sure everyone is equal and no one can be faster. It's like they brought back the "International Race of Champions", with every car being exactly equal. BORING! Let the crew chiefs and engine builders find ways to be faster.

Sure, why not go there? I know the commentary associated with, "You can't buy an American car" but there was so much more to NASCAR when the cars actually looked like the one you could buy on Monday. No longer. They all look the same and they don't resemble anything I see on the street. I remember reading a comment somewhere about a guy who really liked the new stickers on the Chargers. This was years ago. I have never forgotten it. New stickers, chuckle. Yeah, badass. They should at least change the name to something like, "National Front Drivers Turned into Rear Wheel Drive Race Cars Resembling Nothing You've Seen on the Street. I'll run a Camry with any car I have. They come with lawn mower engines in them. I don't give a damn if they run to 300k. They're rice burners and I'll never buy one.

What he said! Just bigger, more expensive versions of what today are called "Late Models". There's more variation in the cars competing in Outlaw Sprints than in NASCAR.
Jmho...

Look at drag racing. Its going down hill. nostaligia drag racing is become even more popular becasue guys wanna see real looking cars racing down the track. back in the day the heros like ronnie sox, buddy martin , the grump , dyno don. They raced cars anyone could buy they won on sunday and their fans bought on monday. As th sport evolved they became more and more out of touch with what a real car could look like but thats the nature of the beast the sport has to evolve. Im far too young to have enjoyed the hay day of the stockers specially the junior stockers that ran nhra becasue anyone had a chance to run off against the pro's . You all had to play within the same playing feild and where limited to modifications depending on class. Even nascar back in the day it was possible for a nobody to get into the race and rub elbows with the pro's But them days are gone. I hate watching racing on tv. id rather go to the local drag strips and watch guys run 10's or go to the local clay track and watch those guys run becasue its not that far fetched for me to be able to do that. I dont wanna watch a team with unlitmited resources race i wanna see guys who have poured their heart and soul into their machines. I support the little guys.

I'm with you 100% Copper. The old door slammers used to really please the crowds, now the Pro Stocks get minimal attention at the track. As soon as the big stuff stops, people walk away to get a drink, etc. Wheelstanding Hemis. That's what I want to see. The one's I could have bought at the dealer. Not a car I can't recognize running within a tenth of the guy in the other lane.
