Department of Energy????

  • Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ..... During the Carter Administration?
    • Anybody?
    • Anything?
    • No?
    • Didn't think so!
Bottom line ... We've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency ...the reasonfor which not one person who reads this can remember.
    Ready???????
    It was very simple..
And at the time everybody thought it very appropriate. ..
The 'Department of Energy' was instituted on
    8-04-1977
    TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE
    ON FOREIGN OIL.

    Hey, pretty efficient, huh?????

AND NOW IT'S 2009,32 YEARS LATER ... AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS
    NECESSARY DEPARTMENT
    IS AT
    $24.2 BILLION A YEAR
    IT HAS
    • 16,000
    • FEDERAL EMPLOYEES
    • AND APPROXIMATELY
    • 100,000
  • CONTRACT EMPLOYEES
AND LOOK AT THE JOB IT HAS DONE!

THIS IS WHERE YOU
SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY
'WHAT WAS I THINKING?'
Ah, yes, good old bureaucracy. ..
And NOW _ we are going to turn the Banking System, Health Care & the Auto Industry over to government?
Quietly we go like sheep to slaughter.
May God Help Us !!!

Man this was a topic years ago when the teeth and meat of the program was killed by the lawmakers during the Clinton years. They cut all the subsidies to the evil oil giants at a time that oil was 20 dollars a barrel and it cost 25 dollars to get a barrel out of the Texas oil fields so they shut them down. Also they stop exploration of new fields. We are buying Russian oil right now from a field in Alaska that we can't touch. So the way we cut down our dependence on foreign oil is to buy bikes or donkey carts ha ha.

Going off the grid is a personal fantasy of mine. I don't see it happening for me any time soon though. Just like my other fantasies!

going off the grid isn;t as far off as you think you can buy solar panels and small wind generators the best part is if you get it set up you can make money off of it by selling surplus energy to the power company

That is interesting but what is even wilder is the fact that the first diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil interesting how it is not that far off from the veg oil that people are using now.

I've thought of having a small wind mill installed on my roof or on a mast in my back yard. In OK it is always windy. I wonder what the city ordinances would be for that...

I work for a electrical contractor and we are now selling solar power and wind power. To keep the cost down most of these systems are not for getting off of the grid but are designed to slow your electric meter down down or in some cases make it run backwards to save on electric cost. The payback at this point only works if your state gives you tax credits and your electric company gives you a small grant for the install

I didn't know you could run a meter backwards. Most of the generators I've seen shut the flow back up the line down in case their was a down line. [To keep from frying repair people] No?

Even if one could slow down the meter that would be helpful, especially during the summer with the AC running.

My wife and I bought an AC this summer to replace the 20+ year old unit that we had. We already save $40+ a month on our electric bill!

yeah those old ac's worked great but had one heck of a power draw when they kicked in.we use to have a big old norge window unit you knew when it kicked in.the old ones seemed to blow ice cubes out of em.

The problem was that our old AC stopped blowing ice cubes. It was keeping the living room bearable but the baby's room was a bit warm. We decided to replace it before it failed completely.

No, in this case you would be generating more then your using and putting it back on the grid. There is a little more involved then just hooking a wind mill to your electrical panel. There is protection and controls. Rather involved but not to difficult to understand. The power compnays are involed in the design and approval on any system installed on the grid. With in 5-10 years you will see a lot of these systems come on line. Its the future. Our electric grids in the US are very old a lot of energy could be saved with major infastructure improvements. We are way behind Europe in this area.

The other option but is rare is powering seperate from the grid a small few are setting up there own power systems with the solar and wind.but it is exspensive to put the systems in but some of them say it is worth it and pays for it self with out paying the power company. So it would seem there are two ways to go with it hooked to the grid and not.

I am not going that direction but sadly two of the power plants here have shut down. Both were coal plants one is tore down the other is sitting waiting for it's fate.the sad thing is the local power co sold out to some spanish company. The biggest problem is there are glitches in the power grid now and mini brown outs.Hmm wonder if that is why my last computer fried.
