County fair time!

Anyone else still have county fairs where you live? Local one has been setting up all week for Friday night opening and runs 9 days.

For almost 25 years the closing Saturday night entertainment was Clarence Carter. Fair was cancelled last year and I don't see him on the schedule this year. At 85 he might have stopped touring.

County fairs were magical when I was a kid and big fun as a teenager. Besides hanging out on the midway and riding everything there, 4H and FFA always had exhibits with cash prizes for produce, livestock, canned and baked goods. I probably spent all the prize money I won on the midway on rides or trying to win a girl a teddy bear or summat like that.

Evansville has one at the fairgrounds near my house every year. I take a girl if I'm dating one at the time. I'm pretty decent at the "shoot the center of the star with the crossbow" midway game. (the sights are off; the trick is to figure out which way from previous shooters.)

Don't get it.

A fair is supposed to be a magical place where you can escape from daily grind for a few hours.

Why then, this?

It's because society sucks to the point that it doesn't teach the importance of civilized behavior to those that will learn, and harshly punish as a deterrent those that won't. I'm in favor of bringing back public hangings.

True, when I was growing up there was consequenses for what a person did. Now it is a few hours of service or a slap on the hand.

I read in a news article a couple weeks ago there was a thing going on this year where individuals would attend the fair and intentionally run into other fair goers in hopes of eliciting a reaction while others would video the confrontation....maybe this was related?

Sad, these people go there w the intent of disruption.

maybea weekend of “protective custody” or community service of cleanup after the fair would put things in perspective?

A public beatdown or pistol-whipping would be more effective, though it would provoke demonstrations and give these punks the attention they crave. They're predators pure and simple and emboldened on top of it.

Sad comment on things when you can't go somewhere to have a good time without worrying about some junior sociopath's "different" idea of fun interfering with it.

And people wonder why I carry.🙄

We have our county fair in August. It's the longest-running one in Texas.

They still have horse racing and betting, just like the in the 1880s when the fair began.

Now THAT sounds like fun!😃 Like a county fair should be.

I'm old enough to remember when the fair had hoochy-coochy shows. Never went in one ☹ as I was in like 8th grade when the county outlawed them.

Video sharing platforms are a pox on modern life. 11pm local news reports a local school system is dealing with school restroom vandalism. The kids tear up the restroom and post it to TikTok. Apparently that's a new thing.

Wonder how these little vandals would take to someone tearing up their stuff that they worked to have?

These hoodlums are the product of the "time out" generation, who didn't believe in actually disciplining their offspring. Unfortunately, things will only get worse down the road.

DPC Fair has both Figure 8 race and demo derby on schedule. They've had them for years and a lot of decent cars met their end in the DD.

I saved my 76 Ninety Eight from it twice. Once when I bought it in 1997, and again in 2005 when one of those DD asses pestered me for weeks to sell it. "Man I could WIN the derby with that!!" Yeah, and you're about to WIN yourself an ER visit if you don't leave...

AACA and OCA award winner and all that idiot could see was a demo derby car.

As I get older I don't deal well with crowds either. It's why if I go out for supper I try to go around 8 after big supper crowds are gone.
