Hi guys - Hope everyone is having a great weekend, and you're doing something special for the Mom's in your life today.

I went to a very nice and well attended show yesterday in Perryvlle, MO which is about 65-miles south of me, 90-miles south of St. Louis. The weather was perfect, sunny and a high of 75°. It was nice to get to a show a little farther from home than usual because I got to see a whole bunch of really nice cars I haven't seen before. The promoter said there were 163 total entries.

I was in a 1958 - 1967 Class, all Makes/Models, and no distinction between Stock and Modified. Think there might have been a little "Chebby bias" in the judging as all 3 places went to Chevy's. In the pics, the first 3 pictures will be cars that placed in my Class, 1-3. Please hold off on any comments until I get all the pictures loaded, there will be 3 posts with a total of 60 pics. Thanks, appreciate you checking them out.. Yes, that Tiger was very nice. Did you notice the hand print on the driver side front fender above the headlight? I didn't see it with my naked eye, but my camera and that light angle sure got it.

Don't know if the judges saw it or not, but that car was in my Class '58 - '67, all Makes/Models, and he didn't place.

I suppose it might depend on criteria regarding how the Class judging was conducted? I really don't have a ton of experience w/ many shows. The Sunbeam Tiger was originally supposed to have a Ferrari engine. The Tiger didn't live long but an interesting history none-the-less.

As for the judging of Classes:
- All Makes/Models within the bracketed years
- No distinction between Stock and Modified
- 15pts maximum for exterior (excl. wheels and tires)
- 10pts maximum wheels and tires
- 15pts maximum engine bay
- 15pts maximum interior
- 10pts maximum display/presentation
- 65 maximum total pts, in the case of a tie the car with the highest number of display/presentaion pts wins

 

Beautiful pictures Chris. I can't decide if the Coral 57 Chevy or the Tiger is my favorite. Is that your hand print on the Tiger? Are those hamburgers on your radiator?

 

Thanks Mike. Ya know I didn't even notice that hand print on the Tiger before I took the picture, the camera sure picked it up though didn't it, the Sun must have been hitting it just right.

Those are lead shot filled leather bags on the radiator keeping my car's displayed Spec sheet from blowing in the breeze. In the olden days us map makers used them to hold our mylar overlay (transparent) in place when drawing a map off of an aerial image. This was back in a time when Cartography was as much an art as it is science.

I wish I'd snapped a pic of my H/Os judging at the show this weekend. I think I saw 5 categories, out of 100 total, being Exterior, Interior, Trunk, Engine, and maybe display. I saw a 14, 15, 18, 19, and maybe a 16, so I think I got an 82. Pretty good for no detailing other than a half-assed wipe of the floor mat. If it's that serious, next year I'll try harder if I go back.

One thing I have noticed is, in 30 years of doing car shows:

It used to be:
Nothing later than '72, maybe '75.
There were original classes and restored and modified.
There was a lot more doowop and the boomers could get around better.

Now:
Anything, even a 2024 modern muscle car, can come to a show and win.
Being original means you lose.
Music and attendance and variety is all over the board. Sometimes that's nice. Other times, it's 90% new cars and young people bringing young people problems to the show. (burnouts, vandalism, wrecks, fights, loud horrible music.)

Since nobody asked: my perfect car show.
96 and older.
Anything from Elvis to the Cult is fine for music.
Best original, best GMC, best FoMoCo, best Mopar. Best orphan and other. Best of show. Best paint. Best Rarity.
Rat rods not permitted and mocked. Legitimate in-progress works allowed and encouraged.

 

John - Thanks, really appreciate ya checking it out and your comments. Alot to unpack in your comments, but here are a few of my observations about this particular show, and in shows in general.

- This was the 1st show I've ever been to that had bracketed years Classes, and didn't distinguish between Stock vs. Modified cars, which I thought was very odd.
Edit - Total assumption on my part, but I believe they set-up the Classes in this way because without a distinction between Stock and Modified, it essentially cuts the number of trophies they need to purchase in half.

- In Shows with bracketed years/Classes structure, which for me is usually 1960 - 1969, or the dreaded 1964 - 1972 Muscle Car Class, I'm usually not gonna place in the Top 3. These 2 Classes often have the greatest number of cars, more highly desirable cars, and the cars their owners sink the most time and $'s into, JMO. My car always does well at a Top 20 or Top 30 type format Show, or a Show with a BOP Class.

- My favorite event is not a judged Show at all, it's a large monthly cruise-in, pre-1980 cars/trucks only, that regularly draws 350 - 400 cars in good weather. Win/win in my opinion, no worries about having my car detailed to the Max, and I get to see a ton of nice cars from the period I really care about, without any of the shenanigans you mentioned.

 

Agreed. This is why the H/O and I go to H/OCA Nationals. We hang out on Thursday night, go on a trip on Friday, do all the car show stuff, swap meet, meetings, auction, big dinner, on Saturday, leave on Sunday, and drink in between. No judging, no points. The "show" is Sat morning where it's more of a see and be seen than being judged.

The only danger is remembering which one is yours since they are all painted the same.
