Bell's Palsy

Anyone else ever had Bell's Palsy? Woke up with it New Year's Day.. Not painful, but sure is aggravating.

Basically the left side of my face don't work. I dribble out the corner of my mouth and have to tape my eye shut when I sleep so it won't dry out.

Hope it's a typical case and goes away in a couple weeks.

While I have never had it, I know of others who have. The symptoms come on overnight and slowly go away over a year or so.

My son-in-law got it. It was gone in 6 days. I, however, wasn't that fortunate.

I am in an ultra small group that didn't completely cure out. It hit me on the morning of January 08, 2011. Right side. If I had to put a # on it I would estimate an 80% return to normalcy. My right lower lip just won't co-operate. People say they couldn't tell, until I point it out. Then it is obvious. Especially when smiling. I still have to be careful how I eat / drink. Straws work best and long necks for beer . For the most part, I cut hamburgers and other sandwiches in quarters. Just makes it easier to control the bites and chewing. I used to be the 1st to finish eating. Now I am the last. Still bite my lip, from time to time. Or, dribble a little. Dehydration seems to make it worse.

At the onset, I covered my right eye for fear of dryness. However, thankfully, I have a tearing issue instead. I carry tissues in my pocket, always, and sleep with a soft wash cloth to wipe it during my sleep. For some reason, it tears up more when I eat.

It is what it is and it won't kill me so I just deal with it. At 66, I could damned sure have bigger issues to deal with.

Again, my condition is VERY rare. Something like 1/10th of 1%. You'll do fine. Should be just a blip on your life's radar.

Good luck.

I've had it twice, once in high school in my left side and again 45 years later in my right side. I don't remember how long it took the first time to go away but the second time it was almost 9 months and I was afraid it was going to be permanent. I wear a hard lens on the right eye and had issues holding it in because of the sag of the eye lid and face muscles I'm legally blind in my left eye and see very poorly in my right without my lens (cornea transplant) created quite a problem with my ability to drive. It was a major worry and I still have problems in very cold weather with watering eye and loss of coordination of my lip of all things.Hang in there most get over it in a few weeks, looks much like a stroke but generally everyone recovers....... I had it on my left side about ten years ago. My Dr. gave me Valtrex. It took about a month to be mostly symptom free. Very scary at first.

My mom has it. Had to go through rehab. It either came from a tick or the drugs used to handle Lyme disease.

Doc thinks mine came from ear infections probably from allergies. It's that central bunch of nerves below your ear that gets all upset when it gets infected I was told. kinda embarrassing but we all seem to get through it.... Tedd

I had it in college. It hit the left side of my face right during a band tour (concert band; I play trombone); needless to say, I couldn't play during the rest of the tour.

It ultimately cleared up in maybe 2-3 weeks. It was scary, for sure. Eye drying out overnight was a big concern for me too. The doc gave me, basically, nighttime eye drops that were the same consistency as petroleum jelly so my eye didn't dry out. I can't remember if I was prescribed any anti-viral meds for it.

Good luck...hope it clears up quick.

I had heard about it but didn’t really know what it was. This past summer I got it. Went to emergency room as I couldn’t talk well and didn’t have control of my tongue as well as the fact that the right side of my face was dropping. We were convinced that I had had a stoke, but after two days of testing the neurologist concluded that it was BP. He prescribed some steroids and I got better quick. I’m approx 95% recovered.

It's much better. I can smile again and both eyebrows will move, but still not gone. I'm told anywhere from 3 weeks to months. One cousin had it 15-some years ago and his mouth still droops a little.

Begging everyone's pardon for putting this in wrong category at first. May you never go thru anything like this...

No problems on the category, it was easily moved. More importantly your starting to feel better.
