Avoid ATL and Delta For a Week or Two

By now, everybody has seen it on the news, but take my word, there is nothing like being there yourself--no hotel vacancies, no rental cars and no flights to speak of. People are sleeping in the terminal for days. People in wheelchairs with no place to go... They rush from gate to gate only to find there are no seats or the flights are cancelled anyway due to a shortfall in staff.

And the chaos extends overseas. On Monday afternoon, we picked up a few passengers in AMS that had been bumped from return to the USA flights Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There was no room for all passengers that needed return flights.

We used every trick in the book and invented a few to get a 3 am lift from ATL to MYR. We got the one and only rental car available there from any company to deadhead back to RDU. No, a rental car reservation does not get you a car. They book the reservations anyway and are overbooked just like airlines.

That sucks. I've heard that Atlanta is the busiest airport in the world. I flew through there on my way to Fort Benning when I joined the U.S. Army many years ago.

ATL is the busiest airport, except for OSH a few days in July each year, but it is efficient. I have flown in as a passenger, and I have piloted aircraft in there myself. I have piloted aircraft into KOSH many times when it is the busiest in the world --some pretty amazing experiences.

Delta is also often rated the best airline. We like Delta and have Diamond status with them. But, when the aircraft fleet and your crews are left out of position system wide, you are in a pickle. The correction will cause pain and it will take time.

CrowdStrike is going to receive an 8-figure bill and they will have to pay it,

As a retired used piece of jet trash I can relate. It hit Delta hugely. Flight crews are experiencing same frustration - basically unable to get to their flights. I read this article yesterday (it was updated today @ 12:05 AM EDT, Wed July 24, 2024).

Delta is still melting down. It could last all week

Curious what carrier Delta CEO Ed Bastian used when he arrived in Paris this morning for the Olympics.

Poor optics right now. On the other hand CrowdStrike’s stock was almost 400 a share while today it is 258. It is in a steep dive.

Yeah, we learned that from Seinfeld back in the 90s.
