anyone watch American Pickers?

i have several guys at work joke that i should be on American Pickers. i never had satellite so i didn't know what they were talking about. well we just got a satellite a couple weeks ago and with the past 2 days i have had the flu bug so i just sit and watched many episodes of it. i am hooked on the show now. i can't believe how much of the tactics they use are the same as what many of us do to find old cars. my wife was watching and couldn't believe someone is making a show on what is normal to us. my only problem is i only look for Oldsmobiles and old 3 wheelers. i don't know enough about the other stuff.

They came thru here a few months back and bought a pile of stuff from a couple of local guys. I watch it sporadically so I don't really keep up with it that much.

I'm friends with a local auctioneer and I always rag him about how he does the same thing the AP guys do but he ain't on TV! His 21 year old son does more picking than he does. They have a weekly Saturday night auction and back in the summer the boy had a bunch of stuff to put up, but every time he moved to put up his lot his dad hollered out to sell something else.

When he finally got to sell his stuff, crowd had thinned out and he didn't get much of a bid even though he had some choice pieces up there. He told me later it took him an hour to sell a Griswold cast iron bean pot and it only brought ten bucks, and he sweated more than that digging it out of the shed it was in.

Did you notice that they drive a Mercedes instead of a GM, Chrysler or Ford? I laughed the episode they broke down and had to be rescued by Mikes bro and his Ford / trailer.

I don't think I'd have the nerve to jump into critter and snake hidey holes like they do. Gives me the creeps when they say, 'guess we'd best watch for snakes'....

Some of the junk they collect? You couldn't sell me in a thousand years that its not still just junk. But the bikes and auto stuff? I get that. What they see as junk might look to you as a hard done by 71 Delta 88 vert in need of help. BTW, what' up with that? Did you sell it?

If you like AP? Try out American Restorations and Rocket City Rednecks. AR will make you want to go out and work on your car. RCC will have you laughing your a$$ off. I like Rog - he's my favorite next to 'Daddy'.

Hope you get better soon.

I like the show, don't watch it a lot but its one of the better reality shows. The folks seem real and down to earth. I'd love to do that. Seems like a lot of fun but also a lot of work for not a whole lot of profit most of the time.

a guy in Alabama got the 71 convertible. he paid me to deliver it the 800 mile round trip. he was very happy with it. he also had many 84 H/O parts that we are still negotiating a price on. i wanted to bring them home but he couldn't figure out a price at the time. i looked all over the net to find something between him and me to bring back home but couldn't find anything. i didn't like driving home the 400 miles with an empty trailer.

I dont like reality shows but I do wach Pickers and American Restorations some. I like that you learn the history of the parts and the vast variety of items. not all is my cup of tea but it is cool to see all the stuff that shows up.

I can't believe you didn't find another car to haul home....at least you would have been smiling. 800 mile round trip sounds like a very busy day. Hope he paid your fuel bill both ways.

Any 'new picks' in sight?

I don't watch it because I have no cable/satellite, but if I'm not mistaken I think they came here a while back. To the Iron King salvage yard out in Humboldt, looking for a '57 Chevy or something like that.

Not sure, a friend of mine told me about it, since it's just a few minutes from here.

Yeah, they did drive through AZ and took that '57 Chevy to the American Restoration show where the Pawn Stars old man got the car. They merged all three shows into one!

he covered all my gas plus $170. the next one i am working on is an hour south of me. it is a 69 442 4 speed car and a 69 cutlass at the same place. i found the cars in 2006 but he didn't want to sell them at the time. i did a couple follow ups with him and this last time he decided to sell. we just have to figure out a price. the cool thing is, he has several 3 wheelers also.

Anyone else been following Discovery's latest reality show "Moonshiners"? Filmed right here in li'l ol' Pittsylvania County Vajenya.

I know Tim and Jesse, and let's just say that like most reality shows, things have been Hollywooded up quite a bit. Tim's ancestors were in "the business" for decades if not longer so yes, he does know about 'shine and used to host the "Moonshiners Jamboree" festival out at his farm every year with a special permit from Virginia ABC to run a batch. The show won't tell you this, but Tim is a retired Army intelligence specialist.

All I'll say is that 'shine, like its evil weed cousin tobacco, put a whole lot of kids thru college around here and kept a lot of families from starving. Made right, it will surpass most "legal" likker for quality and taste. Made wrong, it can kill you.

LOL, that's it.

he talked up the engine running good but i feel sure two cylinders are bad. i had it running good and drove it 16 or so miles. it would oil foul two of the plugs after a short amount of time. when i listed it i stated that it runs but will need a rebuild for what i mentioned. even if he sells it for the buy it now he is not making that much off of it. after having me deliver it he has $2200 ish in it and that's not counting what he has done to it.

lol, now you know who has the 84 H/O parts

no, but he was the one that found me that 71 delta 88. just last month i offered him a finders fee again and told him what i made off the last car he found me. he won't take it. he said he is going to fill in for another driver that is going on vacation soon so he would get to cover new ground.

that would be them. i was riding them on an extreme level for most of my life and never as much as broke a bone. the "death trap" only apply to people that don't know how to ride them. here are a couple videos of the riding i did. people can't say i never broke a bone because i didn't ride hard.
