72 core support

Working on replacing the core support on a 72 cutlass. I found one for sale that's fits a 70 cutlass. Are these interchangeable? Thanks.

No 72' is one year only but a 71' could be modified with a little work.

Although I agree, I guess it would be a good idea to ask what type of grill is going in? If it's a 442 grill either the 71/72 rad supports will work. But if he's installing the eggcrate (CS) grill or horizontal bar (Cutlass/S) grills it would be better with the 72 rad support instead of cutting notches for the grill edges to fit into.

Austin - the 72 model year grills were moved forward and up which required a peak on the rad support close to the headlights. The 1970 models have a completely different rad support and grill/headlight fastening system that is not interchangeable with 71 or 72.

it's a horizontal bar grill for a cutlass. I haven't had much luck finding one. I'd prefer new, does anyone know of anyplace that sells theses or maybe patch pieces. mines all rusted out where the battery sits.

The battery tray area of the rad support is a notorious location for rustout. The 72 rad support is not repopped so the only way to get another is to find someone who's parting out the car. The rad support can be from any of the 72 Cutlass models: Cutlass, Cutlass S, Cutlass Supreme or Vista Cruiser.

Some folks on this site who part out cars and may have what you're looking for:
John McNeel (2blu442) Medford OR
Eric Jensen (jensenracing77) Brazil IN
Brian Trick (507OLDS) - Erie PA
Scott Winn (oldspackrat) Indianapolis IN

There may be others who have the parts; but I know these guys usually have a lot of things others don't.

Are you also looking for the horizontal Cutlass Grills? Wasn't sure if that was what you were saying in the post.

Got it. If you're going for the OEM look, you will need the 72 rad support. Do you have any fabrication or welding skills that would let you repair the damaged area? Maybe someone you know does? Those 2 little bumps on the leading edge are necessary for the grill to fit properly.

What's your location?

I had a 71 support that i picked up from a member and cut out the bumps from a 72. A buddy welded them for me, looks good as new... Going into the car in about a month...
