Should the rear shocks on a 1964 Cutlass be spiral?

 

On my 1965 the original shocks had that design also. After they lost some of their capabilities I replaced them with some aftermarket ones that performed better. The aftermarket ones had larger pistons than the OEMs but had smooth tubes. I suspect that the spiral design on the outer portion of the shocks had little to do with their performance.
