Exclamation Steering column replacement issues:

After 31 years, my 1988 Cutlass supreme classic (G Body) requires a steering column replacement. This year was the last year that Oldsmobile produced a rear wheel drive Cutlass Supreme (Classic) with a V8 engine.

I purchased a re-built steering column only to find that the diameter of the steering wheel shaft is a different size and shape that the original intermediate steering shaft assembly, so now I can't connect it.

The column supplier says that they are a standard size 1" DD. and the clamp may be compacted into a slightly smaller diameter, But If that is true, than why is mine different. Instead of a spline & clamp type my old steering column connection has sort of an 'oval" look to it.

Has anyone else had this issue?
Hopefully I can get a new rag joint with the new diameter or a complete new intermediate steering shaft assembly and problem solved.
Does anyone know why my car has this setup? Vehicle is a 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Classic Brougham, Rear wheel Drive V8 307.

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks
