The mirror glass is on a post that the screw fits into. You have to make sure the post is centered on the screw hole and engaged when you put the screw back in place. Your mirror glass should just pull out of the housing with that screw out, or not engaged properly.

The pictures may help you a little. The mirrors have a base, the chrome trim, the glass and attached post, and the screw. Thats it. If they don't seem to stay adjusted--that is a common complaint. The attachment of the post to the glass wears over time. There is some sort of a ball joint attachment held in place by a copper or brass ferule. That ferule loosens or dislodges with age, and the glass sags. I cannot get my passenger mirror to stay adjusted. It is only there as a decoration at this point.

Post some pics. You may have 1st generation repops (close, but no cigar) for mirrors from that description.

Another view of the base, looking from the foot up, including the casting number.

Sorry. You don't have the original mirrors there. I am not completely sure if they are for another car (I've seen them called "Talbot style"), were period correct aftermarket pieces, or if they are 1st generation repops. The bases on the originals are cast pot metal, and the chrome ring is wider on the originals. They are close, but not the "correct" thing. Fusicks sells the correct repops now, as may other vendors. Around $400.00 a set, I think. They come up on eBay every once in a while as well, but generally go for more than 4 bills if they are originals.

If you have a set with that casting number they should be originals. They may have been replaced with the others because they didn't hold a "set" on the glass position very well and were therefore nearly useless.

Another possibility is that the doors were replaced at some point and the first set of mirrors you showed were easier to screw down. Sounds like you may need to pull your interior door panels and take a look at the leading edge of your door where your mirrors are attached--are there other holes that have been filled in that general area or not? If not, is the paint overspray on the inside of the door the same color as the rest of your car?

I don't have a template for where the correct mirrors go on the door, but I'm sure someone else must have. You might drop a post in the H/O area looking for one.

I stand corrected. They look like the new repops in primer, but they are the correct style (and nice chrome, too). I bet you find some other mounting holes that have been filled if you look inside the doors. Make sure you get the gaskets for them when you go to mount them. Fusick's repops those as well, around 10 bucks a piece. I may even have a set somewhere if you don't have a big Fusick's order coming up.

i have gaskets for the new ones in the box, original plan (when i thought my mirrors were real) was to put the black ones on when i repainted it and then put the "originals" in a box and store them til (heaven forbid) i need money for something/ sell the car. by the looks of from what i can see is they added extra metal to the underside then drilled holes into the filler to make these mirrors work.

Well,
At least you've got the ones you need to make it look right. No added expense there. Just a little prep and paint on the mirrors and doors.

What measurements do you want? The distance between the holes on the bases? I can pull my spare set out tomorrow and get that number for you.

Bought when times were good and prices were high. They need repainted and the chrome is only so-so. PM me and I'll tell you what I have in them.

Hey Sicky,
The foot of the mirror is about 3 & 7/8" overall, and the distance between the screw holes is about 3 1/4". The screw holes are slightly angled.
