Rear shock noise (without being installed)

Hi. I purchased a set of ac Delco premium rear shocks about two years ago for my 72 cutlass rebuild. I just got around to installing them. I noticed that the one shock, if compressed by hand, when i release it and it gets to the point where it is almost totally uncompressed, makes a metal on metal scraping noise. This happens for about the last 2-2 1/2" of travel. Obviously it is way too late to return them. Is there a way i can lubricate up inside the top portion before i install permanently? I have it mocked up now in the frame and it makes the noise when i push the frame down and the shock comes back up.
Thanks for the help!
Chris.
