Looking for help with Rear Springs

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to replace my original rear springs in my 70 W as I believe they are sagging. I'm running 275/60/15 Radial TAs out back and 225/70/15 Radial TAs up front. I want to restore the stock ride height or have a slight rake rear to front. What I don't want is to buy new springs and end up right where I am now. Seems no one publishes any ride height numbers for rear springs.

Best I can tell Moog has three part numbers for my car. They are 5415 (constant rate), CC507 (variable rate), and CC501 (variable rate). I'm getting these numbers from RockAuto, so there may be other numbers you can turn me on to.

Funny thing is whenever I see original photos of A-Body cars taken back in the day they always show the cars sitting a bit lower (especially in the rear) than what most people consider correct today. I've got quite a few old car magazines from back in the day and they all look that way....Chevelles, 442s, GTOs, etc. So it is possible my original springs aren't sagging as much as I think they are.....but regardless I'd like the rear to sit just a bit higher than it is now.

So....anyone have any experience with replacement rear springs..........or words of wisdon to share?

Thanks,
bob

AZ442,

Thanks for the info.....it's exactly what I was looking for. I love the rake of your car. If you have any bigger pics I'd love to see them. Awesome color combo too.

thanks,
bob

Ok, I did some measuring. With the air shocks decompressed (supposedly stock ride height if the springs aren't sagging) I came up with 27.5 inches from the ground to the quarter panel lip over the rear wheel. Fully pressurized shocks gives me 28 7/8 inches. At that height the front and rear of the car are basically level. So if I add another 5/8 inch to get the 2" increase mentioned above I should be good to go. 5/8 isn't a lot, but I'm betting my stock springs are a bit saggy, so in the end I should pick up a bit more than 5/8 inch.

Just one more thing....the CC501's are progressive rate, not constant rate. Does this hurt ride quality, or is it not really noticable in daily driving?

thanks,
bob

Book measurement calles for (from bottom of rocker panel to leval floor, gas tank full, doors closed, seats rearward, trunk empty) Front 9 5/8" measure from 1" rearward of the front door seam. Back 9 1/2" measure from 3" forward of rear wheel opening. (stock wheels and tires)

With the CC501's mine is at 11 1/2" rear and 8 3/4" front. I'm running 215-70-14 tires and KYB shocks, not air shocks.

For me, it sits to high without bigger tires in the rear. Both springs ride real good but I also have new bushings front and rear, complete frontend rebuild, KYB shocks and grand charokee steering box.

AZ442,

Thanks for the pics. I had a chance to buy a black 72 442 back in the day and have always regretted not pulling the trigger on it. Love that black color.....looks sinister. I ordered the CC501 springs and the KYBs. I'll check all the rear bushings when I'm preplacing the coils and shocks.

thanks,
bob

AZ442,

Got my CC501 springs. Opened the box and found out they are not coated with a urethane sleeve as advertised......they're simply painted black. Just wondering if yours have a plastic coating or were just painted black. Not a big deal, just want to make sure they sent me the right part. Next time you're under your car take a look at your springs for me.....I'd appreciate it.

thanks,
bob

Personaly, I like it up a little in the back - easier to see if the car behind you has - litte gumballs on his roof!!
Also, to me, anyway, seems like better stability at high speed, but I don't know how the factory set the downforce with the 442 wing -
