hood hinges
I am cleaning my hood hinges on my 1971 olds cutlass and want to paint them the correct color before reinstalling them.Does anyone know what color the hood hinges are supposed to be? Thanks, Scott.

The '71 Cutlass hood hinges had a gray oxide finish originally as far as I know.
You would have to send them out to be done again to be factory correct for concours type restos.
The way most guys do them is to sandblast the hinges then dry clear them.
It's about as close as you can get to the look and color of gray oxide without having them done, painting them gray never looks right IMO.

I removed the springs from my '68, blasted the hinges and painted them cast grey. That color closely approximates the original grey oxide finish. With the springs, they appeared to be a slightly lighter color in the lone black and white photo that appears in the '68 Chassis Service Manual. Accordingly, I blasted the springs and them painted them a "stainless steel" color. I don't know if it's the correct color, but the finished hinges sure do look like that picture in the chassis service manual!
