Curious if anyone has recommendations on a gas tank that will fit my big ol' beast? Pretty sure it's a 17 gallon. The old one was too rotted - not finding any aftermarkets that say they're for a "98", though lots of Cutlass, F85 and GM A-body(I believe). I can't imagine the fitment has to be 100% "spot on" - as long as it fits, the gas snorkel lines up, and I can attach sending unit and breather/return lines... just hoist it up in there and tighten the straps.
I don't know where you get 17 gallons. The stock tank is 25 gallons. The 1971-72 full size tanks are problematic. They are not reproduced. The 73-76 tanks are available but are not exactly the same. Since you have to replace the floor anyway, modify it to fit the later tank. You might need to have a shop transfer the filler neck from your old tank to the new one.
Kensey, what year Delta 88 did you put a Cutlass tank into? I'd be wary about doing this. In 72 the 98 & Delta 88 were quite a bit larger than the Cutlass. Having said that, I suppose anything can be made to fit with enough modification and fabrication.
1972. The cutlass tank is a few gallons less. The only thing I had to alter were the gas tank straps. I got new ones, also cutlass, they were a little too short.
Well, got the old tank home and am back to believing she's served up her last tank of gas. Pretty dang rusty, almost rotted at seams, and taking the sending unit out revealed some pretty ugly shledge etc. See pics. Just can't seem to find one that I can be confident will fit - but maybe I get as close as possible and then make adjustments.
