I'm currently restoring a 69 Buick GS 350 ( i know it's an Olds forum, but they are both A bodies) and i came across this crack after i had it blasted. Just wondering if its worth the time to try and repair it or if i should look for another one. Crack is just past where the passenger upper control arm bolts on.
@joe_padavano Thanks for the response Joe. So I have a Tig a Mig welder, but I am by no means a 'good' welder (took a weekend course, got quite a bit of hands on time, but that's about it since then). I guess my concern is structural, once it's welded, would there be any issues structurally when the car is all back together and being driven around (even down the strip at times)?
Get a professional to repair that. Even if you have to pay good money for a welder to come to your shop to do the repair it will be cheaper than sourcing another car.
If you feel competent enough to fix that drill a hole at the end of both sides of the crack and weld it. Inspect the rest of the frame carefully to ensure that there aren't any more.
I'm assuming the drilling the hole at the ends prevents the spread of the crack?
Yeah, i looked over the rest of the frame, when i was cleaning it up, no more cracks. One of the body mount holes might need to be addressed, it's thinning. The only other thing i see if rear crossmember has a little tweak to it, not sure if i should cut it out and weld in a new one or try and bang it back into shape, it's nothing huge as those cross members already seem to have a slight downward arch in them.
