68 442 help!!!!!!!

Hi guys,

Been ripping my hair out (what is left of it) trying to find the right front sway bar bushings for my 68 442. Ordered from Rock auto the 15/16" (larger size) bushings and they are too small. The bar is stock. Do I need 1" bushings? Was that stock? Any suggestions?

Another hair ripper is the (new) inner tie rod ends. The zerk fittings are on the back of the arm not on the side like the ones I replaced. The new ones hit the cross member. Any suggestions where to get them?

Thanks,

Craig

If the zerks are wrong, then maybe you have the tie rods on end to end i.e. inner on the outer end...if you have a chassis manual there are illustrations for the sway bar applications and the passenger side end has a particular shape to I.D. the vehicle it is intended for...

The tie rods are the same, both have the zerks on the back.

I just cant find larger bushings from any manufacturers.

A '70 442 uses a 3/8 bolt for the sway bar bushing holder versus the 5/16 bolt on a '68...Can't help you with the tie rod other than your inner is the wrong application.

Sway bar front on a 1968 442 is .97" .... a 7/8 bushing ID would be the best fit. You can use the actual bushing part number 388294 as a reference.

Just found a big long post on Classic Olds on the subject. Apparently I'm not the only skeptical bushing installer! I guess the answer is just install them and SMASH EM IN!!!!!
