'68 442 - Gas Tank
Looking for a reputable source/supplier for a new gas tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, any helpful tips or "watch outs" concerning replacement of the current tank would be great as well.
Tanks a lot.

You can try http://carpartswholesale.com . They have everything you will need also.
or rockauto, ususally very reasonable. Also make sure you are ready with anything else that goes with the install like a new fuel gauge sender, straps, etc. Someone on the forum has a deal on the tank pad if you search.
Hey Tom - glad you're gonna change that thing out. I bought mine from Rock Auto. I searched their catalog, but they didnt list one for 442, but showed it available for a Cutlass 400 CID. Their P/N is is GM34C for the Spectra Canadian-made tank. It comes with the filler neck already attached - check it when you receive it at the neck to tank weld because the packaging leaves the neck exposed in transit and a good hit might crack the weld. Rock's current price is only 124.79. Also, while you're at it they have the sending unit available either P/N FG91D if yours has two metal tubes coming out of it, or FG91C if it only has one - either way the price is currently 39.79. Your straps are fine, just bead blast them and paint 'em detail gray - they're supposed to be nude but they'll start to rust pretty quickly. Those two bolts at the front of the car holding the straps up are kind of special - I dont think they appear anywhere else on the car (kind of long with a pilot on them) so dont throw em away. Wire wheel or bead blast them.
If you're wanting to get that finishing touch, 70Post here sells that Gas Tank pad https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...tion-item.html. It's a nice piece. Also, that 68 should have a weird plastic part on the vent line that goes to the front of the car - I think it's some kind of one way valve - that's ususally broken/missing and might cause a fuel smell. Dreiling might have one if you need that part as well.
Good Luck - Sheri really enjoyed seeing you again.

Thanks to all for the help. Thanks, Joe for the detail in your note. Was nice to see Sheri and your son and daughter. My, how they have grown. I'll probably remove the current tank in a week or so. The more I've looked at it recently, the more I agree it needs to be replaced.
Pretty sure they came out to the factory just plain galvanized like your new one but the dealer could have undercoated black. Probably did not look shiny new for very long since most cars were driven daily in all sorts of weather.
