1972 Cutlass tilt steering wobble
Hi there,
I have a 1972 Cutlass with tilt steering. It is wobbling like crazy, to the point it sometimes goes out of gear (automatic on the column). Is this an easy fix? Anyone have directions? Do I possibly need a different steering column? Thanks for any help.

You're in for a treat on this one. I believe you have to remove the wheel and all innards down to the yolk that allows it it tilt up and down. There should be some funky headed bolts on my dads gran fury it was E10 I'm not sure bout olds tighten those down and you're wheel should be as right as when it rolled off the showroom floor

If I remember right,
there is a caged ball bearing
unit down there that has
probably lost most or all of
its ***** down in your column.
The easiest fix is to find another
column. IIRC, they are a pita.
If you have access to a CSM,
you can see what is involved.

I had the same problem with a Camaro many years ago. I pulled the steering wheel and some other parts and found some loose bolts that needed tightening. I don't recall the process as being a big deal at all and it was done without any special tools other than I think a generic wheel puller. - Steven

Yes , I had a Regal that the tilt locked up on , and WOULD change gears if you tried to turn a corner ...... A right turn = The car shifting into 1st gear .... A left turn = The car going into park .... or reverse .
