Looked at what I thought was an old 1970 442 that was unrestored and in bad shape. The inner fenders were very faded red and seemed original. But red paint was peeling in several areas and black plastic showed underneath.

I always assumed original fenders were dyed red plastic rather than red paint...or not ?

Were they made black then painted ? or were they colored plastic ?

They were red plastic, no paint or dye used.

It could still be a 442 (check the VIN), just not a W30 unless somewhere along the way it was in an accident and the fenders and inner fenders were replaced.
