He should include a picture of the VIN to validate it to potential buyers

Just curious as to why a 72 X code is supposedly "the holy grail"?

 

I spoke to him last night he said it's a x vin but not a factory 4 speed car

 

Because 1972 was the only year that you could confirm that a 442 was a W30 just by looking at the vin, the "X" being the identifier.

 

I know and fully understand that but still don't see why it's the "holy grail". I would think that title would be reserved for either the 70 W-30 or the 68-69 HO cars. Kind of like how the "holy grail" of Chevelles would be the 70 LS-6 as it was the king of all Chevelles and not a low compression 72 model.

 

Well, I think that most consider the '70 W30 the top Olds Muscle, along with, I would say '68-69 H/O's, of course others may chime in with their opinion. I think that we (on this site) get a little geeked whenever a W machine comes up for sale.

we all have our favorite olds and to me X code W identifier is unique.

way to much use of the word "holy grail" with all the makes/models. the word "holy grail" is as good as numbers matching nowadays. everbody has their own idea what it means but to me it is the rarest model with the top dog motor +4speed, and sprinkled with some ultra rare options!! give me a 1970 442 pace car w-30 4 speed and a w-27 please "HOLY GRAIL" !!!!

 

If you want to talk "holy grail" for the 1972 model year, talk about an X-code 72 H/O Holiday Coupe with sunroof (which is NOT a 442, by the way).

And anytime someone mentions "holy grail" my first response is "what is the airspeed of a swallow?"

 

I'm with you NJ. 1972s may not be the most powerful of all the W machines but they are fast enough. I think 1972 was the best looking model of Cutlass/442. Especially the Viking Blue/white color combo. Just gorgeous.

 

I've only ever heard of one still being around. I think they made like three of them

I always had a harder time selling or flipping a 70-72 supreme. Everyone wants fastbacks or true square bodies 64-67

 

x2 especially the actual pace car #1 barn find!!!

...and, by the way, I prefer the Supreme body style and think the '70 Cutlass/442 convertible is one of the most beautiful convertible bodies of any make/model/year muscle car. I personally never appreciated the "eyebrow" line on the '70-'72 Cutlass S/442 quarter panel.

X2!!! This is why I've always preferred the 68-69 Holiday coupes (and VCs) to the 70-72 cars. I do agree that the 70-72 convertibles look better than the prior years, however.

That is the feature I love the most when talking about styling. Not only do I love the look, it also sets the Cutlass/442 apart from their GM cousins. (Skylark, GTO, Chevelle) I prefer the "Holiday" version. To each his own.

Supremes were the nicest looking notchbacks of that era IMO. Though the Grand Prix were very distinctive and sharp. The Monte Carlos were pretty cool too.

 

Yes i know what you mean about those "eyebrow" on the quarter panel. I got one myself and its a little difficult driving around in NYC because those "eyebrow" sticks out a couple of inches and going through a lot of double park cars can make your hair behind your neck stick out.

I think that we can throw in the 1 ? '68 H/O 4speed, that was supposedly built for Demmers son. (Anyone shed some light on that?)
