Also, read the NHRA Tech. Sheet at the bottom and it states "add .030" for carbon build up". Actual ratio on my "Legal 68 Ram Rod engine builds" were 11.87! That was with a zero deck, 60.0 CC heads (after setting in ice cooler for 1/2 hour before taking to head check area to check legal at 60.60 cc), .040" overbore, stock alumn. piston installed 180* backwards on rod (special made pistons by engineering with notch forward so to check legal) , .017 factory steel head gskt., .015" stroke on stock nitrated crank, resulting in 359 C. I. s and the 11.87 ratio.
BTW: after I purchased my "Brass Hat" 70' F-85 W31, which came stock with the 3:91s, within 2 weeks I installed 4:33 s. Speed limit was 70 mph on interstate in Mich. At 70 I was turning 3,900 rpms and boy it sounded sweet. Put it to the floor and it would downshift to second and revs would go to 4,600 rpm and then upshift to third at 6,200 rpm! The Trans. Dept. in Engineering modified the governor from stock 5,800 WOT rpms to 6,200 rpm, which is perfect for the 308* cam. Also, I didn't need to manually move the shifter lever in each gear at 6,200 rpm. By modifying the governor I just left it in Drive, thus not missing a shift.
So running 4:33 was not hard on a well built W31. Never took the valve covers off in its 114,000 mile life before being totaled in a towing accident. Man I miss that car. How many of your cars do you get to see being built at Fisher and Lansing Assembly!

Ron Garey ran 12.60s the day he won Stock Eliminator at the 68 Springnationals. The national record that day was 12.70 which was used as the handicap at that time with a .1 break out rule. So 12.60 was dead on as a 12.59 would have broken out.

My car ran a 12.38 back in 1970. At that time it was running 5:00 gears but the carb. on that run was NOT NHRA legal. This was a Duffy's engine and trans. done by Frank Augustine. Best NHRA LEGAL time was 12.53. Like Dave H. mentioned earlier, with just headers and slicks Frank Augustine ran some 12.80s with the factory installed engine that had not been opened up at that point.

Does anyone know if the counter or warranty replacement engines were built like the "trumped up" early versions or to normal "factory blueprint" specifications? My car came with a warranty replacement type and I've never been deeper than the valve covers. My current race engine is NOT the engine that came in my car.

I'm a little confused, this car looks like the one that won the Jr 17A class at the Olds Nationals last week. But class 17A is for cars that have up to 3 modifications? What modifications does this one have? Just wondering.

This is my old car. It was not at the nationals as far as I know. It is completely stock with no modifications.

I wasn't at the Nationals but I think you may be confusing this car with Al Godon's green one. The green one is a beautiful re-creation but is not an original Ram Rod
