1964 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Custom Sports Coupe

Factory bucket seats, factory dual exhaust, factory console with tach mounted on it, 345hp Starfire engine, five new white-wall tires (Hankook), new master cylinder, new alternator, new radiator, trans cooler, pw/pb, no A/C. Frame, floors, trunk, and body are solid. Frame appears to be factory undercoated and rust-proofed. Bad: Lots of scratches, dings, dents, rusted through rear bumper, bent front bumper and right nose piece. Radio doesn't work, lots of other problems. Biggest negative is the slim-jim transmission. It is finicky and sometimes slips from 2nd to 3rd gear with the usual lug between 1st and 2nd. It is not the original trans. The original trans, radiator, and other original parts go with the car. If interested please send me a text and I'll forward pics of anything you are interested in seeing. $7500. 570-313-8407, Bill R. I and the car are located in the Baltimore/D.C. area. P.S. If you are not familiar with the roto-hydramatic, slim-jim transmissions then I advise you run from this add as quickly as possible!

Yes it is a special car, and one that is rarely seen. I've never seen another Custom Sports Coupe in person. I like the car very much but I just purchased a '65 Bonneville convertible.

You don't see many 64 98s for sale online. When they do pop up they are either sedans or 4 window hardtops. I've only ever seen a handful of coupes and convertibles, and never one in person. Someday I'm going to have to get another 64 98.

There's a black 64 Starfire convertible on eBay in upper NY State. Nicest one I've ever seen. I've contacted the guy a few times

C'mon Joe, you are missing the number 98 from your list of Olds.

Lawd she's handsome...

Joe, it is no problem to get a Tanson or Ross kit and adapt a THM to that car. KQQLCAT had a great thread on doing it in a 61 88. An aerospace engineer should have no problem at all making it work. Beefy 200-4R and 3.42 gears same as a Starfire should make for an eminently roadable car.

I know if I was selling my 98, Joe would get it at a big discount, just knowing it was going to a good home.

I'm sure it will go to a good home.

If I ever get another 64 98 the first thing to go will be the Slim Jim. Either that or I will have to find a world class transmission shop to rebuild it. Is there anyone left that can rebuild a Slim Jim?

Not many shops that will touch a slim jim unfortunately.
Replacing the slim jim with something else is not an easy undertaking. 1) The floor tunnel must enlarged to make room for a "fatter" transmission. 2) I don't think that there are adapter plates to connect another transmission with the 1964 394 Starfire engine. There is some machining work that is required to do so. 3) It will destroy the uniqueness of the Custom Sports Coupe which has a floor mounted shifter and console.

Bill, if your Slim Jim is running good then keep it that way with an auxiliary transmission cooler and frequent fluid service. As you said, swapping the Slim Jim for a modern transmission can be done; however, it isn't easy. There are a few providers like Bendsten's and Tanson:

http://www.transmissionadapters.com/

http://www.forwhatyouneed.com/index.htm

Maybe SOMEDAY I will buy myself another 64 98. I've thought about the sacrilege involved in removing a Slim Jim for a more modern transmission. That's why I will probably buy a 98 instead of a Starfire if I ever have the opportunity.

The Ross Racing trans conversion requires no floor modifications . Read this thread by KQQLCAT:
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...-slim-jim.html
This conversion is far and away the best conversion kit to swap a "modern" trans into a 64 and earlier Olds.
