Hood Insulation

Hood Insulation
Is there a difference between the hood insulation on a 72 Cutlass Supreme and on a Cutlass "S". Mine is an "S", with the louvered hood, but the parts place lists them as different. I'm assuming I want/need the 442 except OIA hood liner, correct?

I'm gonna take a wild stab at this question and say that just about everybody carries this product. Year One, Fusick, the list may be endless. I just finished a friends car who wanted reliable horsepower and good driving manners. We went with a 502 crate motor, a beefed 700R4, a very nice 12 bolt with 3.08 gears. New suspension from Hotchkis that lowered the car about an inch, new tires and rims, new cooling system, new exhaust, driveshaft, crossmember, control arms, etc and blah balh blah. The interior went from column with a bench to buckets and console. We fitted the overdrive detent into the stock console so it looks perfect and shows all the gears. I found the car didn't cool down very fast with the insulation on it. It was like big blanket keeping the heat in. I would walk by the car after it had been shut down for hours and the hood was still warm Needless to say I took it out. The paint may wear faster but the motor will run cooler. As it is the motor runs at about 200F even in heavy traffic. It has stump pulling torque and is a joy to drive. As for you guys thinking blasphemy, you know I am all Olds. My friend is not and he had it built the way he wanted it. It is reliable and FAST. BTW Jeremy, this thing is finally done. I'll send you some pics if you want. Jim

There are two (original style) available. The S is different from the Supreme, that's why I suggested to call Fusick's. The O.A.I hood does not use any hood insulation. There is also a generic pad available, which is not correct, but may do the job, and costs less.

Just to add another view on the purpose of the insulator - I've read and believe that is was actually more for sound insulation than anything. Keep in mind many cars did not and still do not come with one and I've never heard of anyone having issues because of it.
I haven't had an underhood pad on my Monte for years and my GTO doesn't have one either - there has been no ill effects on the paint of either hood (top or bottom).

Speaking of hood insulation, what's the correct way to adhere it to the hood? I have the 6 or 7 plastic push-in tabs that hold it, but they don't seem to do the job completely - it still sort of sags.
I assume it was originally glued as well. It's been so long since I stripped the original off, I don't remember how it was on there! What type of adhesive was/should be used?

The best thing to use now is 3M 8090 super trim adhesive, which is suitable for high heat areas.
