Hood insulation

Hi, anyone know what the differences are in cutlass hoods. Have a '72 supreme, but put a louvered hood on it and now am looking at getting molded hood insulation. The insulation are listed for the Supreme and Cutlass. I have the original hood and the underside looks identical to the louvered hood. So, should I order the insulation for the Cutlass or Supreme? Thanks, Dean

If anyone has a picture of what the insulation is suppose to look like I would appreciate it. I have a 70 Cutlass S, but have seen 2 different types and was not sure which one to buy.

hood insulation

defiant 1, looks like you are trying to figure out the same thing I am. If you've been searching ebay, the regular hood insulation is for both the Supreme and Cutlass, but when it comes to ordering the molded insulation, they are listed separately. If you call to order, the companies have no idea what the difference is either, because they order from a vendor and don't have any on hand.

The molded style is correct, but I do not know the difference bewteen the S/442 and the Supreme. I would give Fusick a call and ask. That is where I purchased the one for my '71 and am happy with the quality.

I did a frame off restoration and who would guess that the hood insulation would baffle me this much.

It all depends on the look you want and the $$ you wish to spend...
Below is what Fusick offers.

The nice looking show quality one is $150 and is pictured. MAybe I will get that later on when resto reaches completion.

The $33 not-so-nice one is like the one i have on my car now (see below). Back then, the molded one was not even available.

Thanks for the detailed information Rob. Do those fasteners you have that hold up the insulation work okay? Or did you have to use some sort of adhesive in conjunction with the fasteners??

The assembly manual shows the gluing pattern for the hood insulation.
That pad deal is confusing, the difference must be for the hood vents on the sides? Why they say Supreme for the flat hood one is beyond me, what do I get for my Vista?

This is for '71, '72 should be the same...maybe.

The assy manual page pictured above shows both the square and round fasteners.
My 'cheapo' pad came with the square fasters but none of them would stay in. I got new round ones from Napa (a 'HELP!' part) and they seem to hold okay. Gluing in places is recommended, even though I did not do it.

When I installed my cheapo pad, i wanted the grey side towards the engine, so I cut a new cutout for the hood light. That cutout chunk was glued in the existing cutout on the other side.

Those molded hood pads any good?
They don't flake fiberglass all over everything like the old ones do they?
I had one of the non-molded deals on my GTO for about a week before I tore it off and made rear seat insulation out of it. It never hurts not to have one at shows around here, most guys don't, and the hood doesn't warp from the engine heat either.
More for noise than anything else IMO.

I sort of like the roaring of the fan blade and chittery-chittery sound of the clutch fan when engaged at idle, the sound of the seventies, makes me nostalgicous.

Thumbs up Hood insulation

I've called several places to see what the differences are and couldn't get an answer. I put my 2 hoods next to each other and they are identical. They are the stock Supreme hood and a Louvered one. As far as the round or square retainers, it depends on the year of the car. My '72 uses the round ones. I am going to take a stab at ordering a molded pad and go with the one for the Supreme. Let you know when it comes.

Sounds like the header lore, "will not fit supreme models".

Just ordered the press molded hood pad from Fusick for my 71 442 and realize it is the wrong one. I called and they sent the specs re holes and sizes between the 2 options (442 and supreme) and it looks like the supreme one is the one I need. I am not sure if it is wrong in their catalog or what the confusion is but now it will be hard to solve as I live in Canada and the shipping costs will be nuts. Any one else have this problem? The quality does look good though.

When I ordered mine for the 72 from Fusicks back in February, I talked to Dave.... Told him I had a Supreme. He asked me if it was like cut out, or angled on the front edges and I told him it was. He gave me some measurements and told me how to measure mine across, and he asked if I had access to a fax machine, which I did, at work, and he faxed me two drawings - one for a 442 and one for a Supreme, both with measurements on them.
He said he just wanted to make sure which hood I had before I ordered it. He was really nice. I still haven't taken mine out of the box and looked at it. I probably should to make sure it's the right one!

Thanks Cutlass girl. I was talking to Dave yesterday and he sent the drawings you are talking about and just from the pics I can tell I should have the Supreme not the 442 even though I do have a 442??

Which 442 hood do you have? Is it the one with the louver inserts?

Thanks flat. When I ordered they just went by my year and that it was a 442. Now they say that it is odd that GM used some supreme hoods on 442s??? Did you show them a pic or do you have a Supreme?
Did the pad fit OK?? Also do you know the measurement for the 2 front holes? The drawing they sent me shows 38 3/4" center to center but my measurement looks like 39" center to center.

1971 442 convert, I haven't ordered it yet. I had the order page open, but chickened out because I wasn't 100% sure on which one to order. Thanks to you, I am sure I need the pad for the Supreme. Send pictures of your car when it's done, it's looking like you are doing a great job with it.

I used 3M Super Weatherstrip (black) adhesive on my press molded hood insulation. It will dry quickly.

Good call, I have some of that. I used it to install my grip on my compound bow. How much did you use? A couple of dabs here and there or did you run a bead all around?

I used about a half of a tube.

I went all the way around the perimeter, about 1 to 2 inches in from the outer edge.

I also put the adhesive on the "X" supports.

My hood insulation had to be held on very good, because I used the large square fasteners, and they like to pop out.

This is what Rob recommended, so I bought a can!

...DAP Weldwood contact cement works great - brush on, wait 20 minutes, and stick! Should do good with that thick pad.

Bluevista used it and the pad looks beautiful!!

...The hood pad was pretty easy, just glued it in the middle on the sides, it hung slightly down and it bugged me, but you really don't need too since it's so stiff, I'm just a noodge.

Got the insulation attached. I used 3M weatherstrip adhesive on the the supports (used sparingly) and sprayed general spray adhesive to help hold insulation up while the 3M set.

I broke one of the stupid fasteners (did not have it lined up correctly and snapped it off).

Other than that, it has been a couple of days and it seems to be holding well.

It has a WONDERFULLLL smell, too!
I was almost as high as the Rolling Stones on tour when I was doing my door panels...

I never used any glue on my hood pad, but since I have an almost empty can of glue, i might was well stick it around the edges...

EDIT 6-1-10:
Despite the great aroma, I can no longer recommend this stuff for automotive use, as experience has recently shown that it comes unglued from high temperatures.

Sears Hardware has the round hood pad fasteners for 45 cent, exact same ones Fusick has for 75 cent.
Just picked up some rubber O rings for my door handle pushbuttons and some retro slotted washer head license plate screws and nylon inserts there.

I have some really nice original hood pad fasteners with GM part numbers from Sandy's car that I'm going to use on the Vista.

They have the round chrome bolt head covers at Sears Sandy, some got skulls and devils on them. Be cooler than painted bolt heads.

You're hijacking The Prettiest Ones original hood pad holder thingys?? What a shi*!!!!! Were they still good? That's ok - we're happy to share with you.

I'm tired of bolts! Tired... tired.. tired. My fingers hurt. They are cleaner than they were before, but thats about it. I may have Don paint the whole friggin radiator support thing or whatever it's called, even though it doesn't really need it. I'm still deciding. Skulls and devils.... hmmmmm.... could have something there!

I know this is an old thread, but for those that use the search feature, here is a simple way to know which hood you have for which liner you will need:

I just go to the Fusick catalog, and get the one listed for my year. The correct one being the rigid one.
