Mirror glass replacement

Hey guys,

So I'm embarrassed to say that while trying to tighten the body of my side view mirror to the base, I chipped and cracked the glass. Keep in mind this was a last minute "detail" before going to a show last week!

Do you guys know how to remove the glass? I believe it's just glued in so I would think a heat gun would do the trick if that's the case, right?. I'll need to remove another glass from a donor mirror as well so I need to be able to do this twice without breaking anything.

Also, assuming they do glue in, what kind of glue do you recommend?

thanks!
John

I did basically the same thing. I shattered mine. I took the whole mirror body to a local glass cutter and they cut and replaced the mirror in my shell for $20. In 1968 the glass was flat with no words (Object is closer....) or magnifacation. I don't know if your '76 is the same style but it's was quicker and easier than replacing it with OE for me.

Thanks Adam but my mirrors are actually remote controlled and therefore set back from the face of the mirror's head. I'm still leaning towards trying my trusty new heat gun on a spare mirror. Boy am I glad I saved a whole bunch of spares over the years!

Still open for suggestions guys.
