BLACK OXIDE Iron finish.

I just found this recipe in Popular Mechanics March, 1933 issue.

Dissolve 1 oz. of Copper nitrate in 4 oz. distilled water.

[Make sure your bolt heads are nice and clean. I'd wire wheel them, Hit them with the mapp gas torch, to burn off any oils, and then wire wheel them again with an uncontaminated wire wheel.]

Heat up your bolt head on the gas burner for about 15 seconds to get it a little hot, and then dip it in the solution. A greenish coating will form. Carefully hold your bolt head above the burner to turn it to desired shade of black.

I'm surprisingly delighted my television stopped working when I never went out and bought that converter box thing-a-ma-jig.
