Manual Drum to Power Disc Conversion

Manual Drum to Power Disc Conversion

Greetings everyone!

I'm new to the sight, and I apologize if there's already another thread I haven't found that covers this.

I'm the proud owner of a '72 Cutlass Supreme with manual drums. I'd like to convert to PB disc/drum.

I've been reading some horror stories about Power Drums to Power Discs, how horrifying is it to go from Manual to Power?


Would I be better off trying to whiz in the corner of a round room?

I didn't know I'd have to replace rims too.

I may just wanna start with a booster and try Power Drums for a while.

The only rims you would have to replace is if your SSI's are the earlier 14X6" wheels and then not every year of manufacture. For your vintage they should be 14X7's and those will work fine on the disc brakes.

Not a difficult swap, and for something you drive much I think its a nice upgrade.

If I do just go with Power Drums...

I need a booster and a master cylinder, correct? Aren't the M/C's different bores for power and manual?

Booster yes, but I thought the master cylinder was the same for manual drum & power drum. Someone else who knows for sure will have to speak up and verify this for you. John

Appears that m/c is 1" bore, same for Power Drum/Manual Drum.

Looks like I'll need an:

11" Booster

Booster Sleeve

PB Booster Vac Line

PB Booster Check Valve.


Found a great thread on this on a Chevelle site.


It'll be a good first project for me.
