I'm guessing its the brake sensor but i 1 i cant find one online anywhere and 2 i cant find it under the hood..... I really need some help and i would greatly apreciate it..... thanks in advance for any feedback anyone can give me

Don't know any thing about 71 cutlass!could it be the park brake light? You may have to re set the proprtion valve just follow the brake lines from master cyl to frame valve should be on frame the sensors may be there.

the brake light works off of two sensors. one is the emergency brake, the other is in the distribution valve on the frame. start with the e-brake. if the pedal is not all the way up or not pushing the switch in it will turn on the light. the other as was stated is if the system lost presure on one half the distribution valve will shuttle over to turn on the light and will sometimes stay over. if that happened then you will not have pressure on one half (front or rear).

Here is a detailed thread on the brake light staying on...

If not the parking brake light switch, then disconnect the wire at the proportioner valve on the lower left frame rail.
If light goes out, either you have a hydraulic pressure imbalance or the valve needs replacement. I thought I have seen these sold somewhere.....
