Hi All, tomorrow I am going to replace the power booster & master cylinder on my 71 Old’s Cutlass Supreme. Just looking for any heads up advice before I start. It was replaced about 4 years ago so I am not anticipating any frozen bolt issues. In searching various threads over the years I see some people recommend removing the windshield wiper motor, others suggest remove the inner fender, etc.

Looking for wisdom from those with experience.

I replaced mine without removing anything else. It’s a tight fit to reach at least one of the nuts. Having a ratcheting box end wrench would make the job a lot easier.

 

Why do you need to replace a power booster that's only four years old?

 

Autozone special I guess - big swoosh noise in interior of car when pressing brake pedal, and can’t get air to stop coming out of calipers. I used a cardone reman when I did this back then, was on a very low budget.

Replacing master cylinder & booster with a Leeds LN-6. Also installing all new brake lines.

 

I did it recently without removing anything including wiper motor, or inner fenders. A few months earlier I had my fenders, inner fenders and hood off. It would have been easier to do it then for sure, but it wasn’t too bad. I also did not remove the lines to my master cylinder so I didn’t have bleed the brakes afterwards. All in all took a few hours.

 

I removed the wiper motor. Made it easier.
Spray PB Blaster on the threads first.
I had a nightmare of a time.

 

Dam ßhame about the booster I replaced mine in 03 no problems since. Use kroil for the nuts and if you can do not pull the lines it will be less work overall be careful on not collapsing the lines and slide it in behind the master cylinder. With minimal master cylinders maneuvering. Paint the booster first if not really coated good. Rust at the master area can be a problem.
