1964 olds cutlass brake system

Hey Guys, was wondering if any of you had this problem, can't find this brake problem did a clean up on the brakes all 4 wheels + 2 leaking wheel cylinders power bled the system all good + good pedal when I drove & lightly applied brake grabbed bad like I jammed them on, readjusted all 4 made them loose to spin so there was NO sound of rubbing - drove it again same like slamming on brakes - decided since original brake booster & master replaced with new adjust throw properly & check vacuum to new unit all good again same thing last desperate effort replaced all vacuum hoses & vacuum hose to brake booster + checked new booster vac valve worked perfect drove again same thing --- any ideas?

Did you replace the shoes that were contaminated from the leaking wheel cylinders?

brake shoes

Hey Joe
Thanks for getting back to me unfortunately the cylinder was leaking minimal against the backing plate both were a small dribble shoes were untouched
Please remember the car sits more than its driven in temperature controlled garage attached to my house
Shoes are on correctly & are functional that's what's so puzzling springs are all good, backing plate I cleaned up during inspection, the adjusters I cleaned up so they work free & easy to crank/turn
I've never seen something like this drums are true & clean
This beats me ??????????

Check for wear on the backing plate where the metal part of the shoe rubs on it. I've had vehicles where the edge of the shoes wore grooves in the backing plates, which caused all sorts of problems when the brakes were applied. Usually there's enough meat in the backing plate to grind those locations down flat if there is wear. I always put a dab of grease on those rub points.

I second joe’s original response. I had the same problem and it was grease/oil on the pads/shoes. Might be worth the effort to scuff them up real good if everything else checks good. Those pads may have slowly been absorbing fluid for a while.

Good call. Relatively inexpensive way to troubleshoot and rule those out.

Lead and trailing shoes

Make sure shoes are on correct. Short one in front long one in back.

I'm with Joe about the groove worn in backing plates. Also make sure your parking brake cables aren't seized and pulling on rear shoes ( if rears are locking)

In all my experience with leaking wheel cylinders and having brakes lock up, its always been contaminated shoes. Let us know how it works out.
