Replacing the parking brake cable and hit a snag. There is a threaded rod that secures the guide that splits off the cable for each rear wheel. One but on the end.
It was a royal pain to remove. Now I am attempting to install the new lines and can’t get the factory (or a new) nut to take more than 2-3 threads. It must have taken at least 15 threads before. The rod is tapered at the end as you can see in the picture. Threads on the rod all look fine and I even cleaned them up gently with a wire brush.
Am I missing something? I am considering cutting the tapered end off. Trying to avoid running the cable all the way to the pedal. A pic of the setup from the new parking brake kit is below….need to run the rod through the block and secure lock nuts on both sides.

SOS
The end of the thread on that rod does not look good to me, and it may be damaging the threads in the nut as the nut is threaded onto the shaft. I would file that gouge so the end of the thread is clean and the nut starts easily.
I don't know what this was supposed to represent, but it has nothing to do with a 1972 Supreme.
First question is, which transmission do you have? The intermediate cable (the one that loops around to the two back wheel cables) is different lengths depending on the transmission. This is due to the location of the trans crossmember. You need to know the trans you have to order the correct cable.
Second, do you have the cable routed correctly? All the hooks in the correct places?
Third, get a die and chase the threads on the threaded part of that front cable.

It’s an aftermarket kit….

Since the mind reading thing isn't working, are you saying that you have that aftermarket kit on your car? Or is there some other reason you added that photo to your question? Sorry, but it's impossible to provide useful answers without knowing what the configuration of the car is.
