Soft brakes

My ‘68 442 has disc/drum brakes that have worked fine for past 4 years. After making new front right brake line to go around headers I have not been able to get a firm pedal. I have bled the brakes 3 times no with no improvement. Just replaced MC and still nothing. Only thing that might be an issue is calipers might be on wrong side. Bleeders are on bottom and drivers side caliper says “R” and passenger says “L”. I typically see bleeders on top so wondering if that could be the culprit. If so, not sure how brakes worked well since I have owned the car.

Drivers side caliper.

Yeah, bleeders on the bottom will trap air. Swap them to the correct sides so the bleeders are on top and the air can be purged when bleeding.

Bleeders pointing down is your problem; air rises, you can't get the air out if the bleeder is at the bottom of the caliper.

Thanks fellas. Still doesn’t answer the question of how the brakes have worked fine for past 4 years but all I care about is getting her back on the road before Labor Day weekend.

Whoever bled the brakes previously must have used a pressure bleeder or a vacuum bleeder to get all the air out. Swap the calipers.

When you replaced the line air entered into the system. The brakes need to be bled and they cannot be bled properly with the calipers on the wrong side (bleeders on the bottom). That's why it worked before and not now. Doesn't matter how they dad it bled previously, if you can't reproduce the way they bled the brakes you have to swap calipers. Otherwise the next time you do brake work you will have the same problem.
