power brake booster fail?

In the past few years I have replaced the power brake booster 3 times. They work fine after installation but it seems that if i have to brake hard it fails and there are no more power brakes. It's a 71 cutlass supreme convt. 350 2 bbl

I agree we need a better description of the failure.

With 3x failures that you have experienced after hard braking, the only thing that comes to mind is the push rod may not be adjusted properly and it's too long, so when you stand on the pedal you are breaking something inside the booster.

Maybe that isn't even mechanically possible, but it's all I can come up with from your description.

Wow. Most of these last fifty years or more without any service or maintenance of any kind.
What are you doing to kill three in a few years?

failure

What happens is the brake pedal becomes hard to press and you have to really stand on it and its like the power is gone from the "power" brakes. Thanks guys

Yes, that describes a failed booster, but what could you be doing to cause it?

Perhaps you have a flimsy vacuum hose on it from the intake and it is collapsing causing a loss of vacuum to the booster?? Just a guess.

When you replaced the booster, are you sure you used the right hole on the brake pedal when reconnecting the new clevis? 2 failures so close together also makes me wonder about the vendor of the booster.

This needs to be verified, but I don't think it's physically possible to force the clevis to align with the wrong hole. It just doesn't move enough, at least not on an A-body.

Actually it can. I noticed that when I replaced my booster 3 years ago. The 71 and 72 will have the same assembly.

Are you having your's rebuilt or getting a repro?
If its a repro I'd question the quality.
