Disc brake conversion.

If this was asked before I'm sorry, I looked and didn't find any answers. I have a 1971 oldsmobile cutlass convertible. I just purchased a 8.5 posi rear end with 3.42 gears. I think I want to upgrade to disc brakes. My question is should I do front, back or all? I currently have drums all around. I have 235 60/14 tires. eventually I will move up to 15 inch tires. Can someone recommend a good tire size for my 14's. Thanks in advance.

I would do front now and back later, maybe. The tires you have on are fine, it's a limited selection when it comes to 14". Jmo

Some 14 inch runs won't work with disc brakes. just a FYI I think that the 71 wheels should work but not positive. There is a ton if threads here on this subject search could be your friend on finding a good kit or parts to build your Own

Look at tires.com and tirerack.com to see what is available.
You will likely find a few 60, 70, and 75 series tires.

There are only two readily available choices for tires that are close to the diameter of the original tires, 215/75-14 or 225/70-14. Both of these are about 26.5" in diameter. The largest 60-series tire you can get is 245/60-14, which is about an inch smaller in diameter. I think these leave waaay too much daylight between the tire and the wheel opening.

factory disc set-up

I have a factory front disc set-up that will fit your '71 and should work with your 14" rims if they are the later style (the early rims were fitted to clear drums on the front). I was planning to install these on my '72 convertible project but decided to go with 17" rims and 12" C4 Vette brakes (still working out the details on the swap, MC, proportioning valve, etc). I'd just like to get what I paid for them.
I'd like $250 plus the ride (as they say). The rotors look like they still have some life left in them (you can still see the wear groove). I removed one of the calipers to make sure they weren't frozen up and it moved smooth enough to remove the pads; but you should definitely plan on rebuilding the calipers with new seals and pads and have the rotors turned down for straightness.
