compatible brakes for a 67 cutlass

Wondering if anyone has an answer if 68-72 a-body brake setups (booster, cylinder, calipers, etc) as well as power steering pumps and boxes will fit for 67 a-body models. I'm looking to swap out the manuals but want to use original parts, plus they're must less expensive, even if I have to clean up or rebuild.

Hi Dave.
I know the disc brakes will interchange. Not sure if the booster will or if you'll need to have a 1967 power booster. You can change the master cylinder on the booster though if you have power drums now. You will need to install a proportioning valve as your drum brake setup only has a distribution block. Joe Padavano has a great thread on an inexpensive disc brake swapover but I'm unable to find it right now.

The power steering boxes will interchange although the pitman arm is different where they attach to the box. So you'll need to get a 1968-72 pitman arm. Both upgrades are pretty easy to do. If you have the time use the search option and read through threads that other people have posted for their project. John

thanks john, I already found Joe's thread, great right up! he should be given an award haha. I get the booster will need to be a 67, but will the 68-72 master cylinder and prop valve just hook right up? How about the power steering pump as well?

Hi Dave
The 1968-70 proportioning valve attaches by the master cylinder. If you use that one you can keep the block mounted to the frame. The 1971-72 years combine the proportioning valve with the distribution block and that was mounted down on the frame. If you use that one you'll replace the block you presently have. I know on the 1968-72 with headers that block/valve has to be relocated. If you are using stock manifolds I think your OK, but if headers then you'll need to investigate that a little more as I'm not sure on 1967's.

In 1967 the power steering pump mounted up high on the drivers side. The 1968-72 was down lower. Either one will fit, it depends on if you want the original look or just function. John
