Brakes won't bleed - hard pedal with open bleeder screw
Hey all! Still sorting out all the gremlins for this summer with the '67 Delta.
Lately, I've noticed the braking has been pretty poor, and it's been pulling left. I adjusted the drums up front thinking that might solve the issue, and while it helped some, it seems like it might have air in the line. (Note: power assist drums all around, '67 2-door Delta 88 Holiday Coupe with a 425 V8)
My dad and I attempted to bleed the brakes the other day, and when I cracked the bleeder on the passenger side, I got hardly any fluid, and he said the pedal didn't hit the floor like it should. After thinking on it, I wondered if it was a collapsed/deteriorated rubber brake hose on the passenger side since I had that issue with a '66 Beetle in the past. I don't see any crimping on the metal line running to the passenger side. When I mentioned that to my local NAPA buddy, his opinion was maybe the proportioning valve was sticking.
After looking around through the threads, I saw that it's actually probably a balancing block in my case, since it's a '67.
Regardless, I popped the line off at that block, and some fluid ran out, so I'm again wondering if it's the hose.
Do you guys have any ideas of where to check before I beat the crap out of the fitting at the hose to replace it? Seized up pretty bad, there.
Disconnect the hose from the line and see if you get fluid.
I'll give that a shot.. I'll probably mangle the fitting since it's stuck pretty badly.
I removed the wheel cylinder from the hose yesterday and didn't get any fluid.. I let it sit there a while.. does that tell me much? Either way, I'll get to work disconnecting line from hose.
How did the tip of the bleeder look? Could the wheel cylinder be gunked up?
Hey, Frank! I wondered the same thing. I just replied as you sent that.. I removed the wheel cylinder, and no fluid came out of the hose at all. The cylinder had fluid in it, and it seemed to move freely and looked like it was in pretty good shape. I'll try to get some pictures up.
..and forgot to answer the question.. tip of the bleeder did look a little gunky, so maybe the wheel cylinder could be a possibility, though I would still expect fluid to run from the hose, unless I'm wrong on that.
If the above doesn't work out, I would crack the lines at the master cylinder and begin at that point. Push the rubber seal back in on the master lid try to pump the pedal loosen master line/s tighten and try again.
Let us know if the rubber seal doesn't expand under the lid when trying to bleed the master after a few attempts.
All right, guys.. I ended up cutting the line right where the fitting was, and as soon as I did, fluid started dripping out. I got a new fitting and a new hose, flared the end, put it all back together, gravity bled it, and bam! Good brakes!
It was the hose and/or an end of the hose. Thank you all for the input!
If the other 2 hoses look like that I would replace all.
Totally agreed.. checked it out this morning, other side is in bad shape, too. NAPA will have my hose Monday morning, so that'll be the project of the day. I'll take a look at the back, as well.
