88 Olds cutlass supreme bleeder valve (drums)
Hi,, new here to Olds world... finally bought a nice 88 olds cutlass supreme brougham. Just doing some maintenance work on it but alittle stumped. Im wanting to flush the brake lines and the rear are drums. Having a hard time understanding the bleeder valve back there,, is it located at the far top of the drum on the inside of the rim? if so, how does one get it loose as it sits in a grooved area with little room to work..>? thanks df.
Soak the bleeder screws repeatedly with a quality penetrating oil and wait for it to work. I like to use a 6 point socket as Joe mentioned. Since there is room I'd prefer a T-handle vs. a ratchet or breaker bar to keep the torque centered over the bleeder screw. Any force to the side vs on-center ups the chance of snapping the bleeder.
Another way to reduce the chance of breaking the screw is to put a snug fitting piece of metal e.g., a drill bit into the bleeder hole before torquing. It isn't horrible if a bleeder screw breaks, just replace the wheel cylinder.
Seeing the corrosion, consider closely inspecting all of the metal brake lines especially in areas covered by spring like windings and tight bends.
Good luck!!!
