71 cutlass convert m/c
71 cutlass convert m/c
I ran into a little problem on my 71 Cutlass. I went to replace the master cylinder (power drum brakes) and can't find anyone that has the correct replacement. My master cylinder has a very deep hole in the back of the piston where the pushrod from the brake booster fits, basically the pushrod is long. All of the replacement master cylinders I can find at the local parts houses have a very (almost nonexistent hole) shallow place for the rod. I don't want to go the expense of disc's at this time, just want to drive my car without worrying about not being able to stop. Anyone else run into this issue? Where did you find the correct replacement?
Thanks,
Thanks,
I ran into that problem with O'Reilly. The one they show was for disk brakes. Then I had a wheel cylinder start leaking and that car has sat for too long due to other stuff going on. The one they had for manual brake looked like it might work. I now have the parts to do a disk brake conversion and some Vista Cruiser brakes for the rear. Should make a real difference.
Thanks for the response. They (any of the stores) are listing two different m/c's for this car. One for disc, one without. However, the "drum" brake m/c isn't the correct one. The end of the piston where the booster rod goes into is very shallow. Mine is probably 1 - 2 " deep....
If you haven't done so, you might try seeing what they have listed for a Chevelle or one of the other A bodies. Should be the same. One other possibiliy is getting a kit and rebuilding yours. I don't know if they even make kits anymore. Try NAPA maybe.
NAPA is about the only real auto parts store in my area. You might also try RockAuto. I just checked and they list a bunch of them. Most everybody here (yours truly included) has had excellent service from them. Here is the link.
