70 442 Brake Distributor Assembly/Header Conflict

I just discovered that the brake distribution assembly was not fastened to the frame by the previous owner. I'm assuming that he took it loose to finagle the headers into place and then couldn't get to it again to fasten it into place. My question is this: If the headers are practically resting on this assembly, will the heat produced by the exhaust have a detrimental effect on the braking system?

If anyone has run into this situation and came up with a workaround, I would appreciate you sharing it with me.

It's not very pretty, but the block can be carefully forced to the top of the frame to keep the valve cool. I prefer mounting the valve below the m/c, which requires new plumbing..

It was taken loose to move it away from the headers. Its what most do to keep it away from the heat.

I don't think I can get enough slack on the lines to raise it above the frame. I'm also worried leaving it supported by only the lines. Is this just a casualty of running headers or is there a style that address this problem?

It needs to be moved to at least the top of the frame. There should be some line clamps you can take loose to accomplish the task.

Eric,
I'll take a look at it and see if that will work for the short term. I definitely want to relocate it at some point.

I would move the distribution block away from heat sources and locate it somewhere safe. Then I would make new brake lines to fit.
The block can go anywhere you like, even on the roof if you want to, but keeping the lines as short as practical is best practice.

That was a problem for my 1969 , I had to remove the bolt from valve and push and twist it a little to the point where I had about a 1/2-3/4 inch header clearance. i never had a problem with the front discs as far as overheating and would be fine for everyday driving. a lot of air gets under there to keep things cooler

Resurrecting This Thread

Does anyone have pictures of their relocated brake distribution block? I have the motor pulled out and thought it would be a good time to relocate the block.

Thanks,
Rick
