67 cutlass

Hey all,
Struggling with brake pedal. Just installed new master cylinder (no booster, its manual) and re assembled the brake pedal into the clevis which is connected to the rod that butts up against the master cylinder through the wall. Used upper hole on pedal and have it fairly firm against the master. Issue is, the rod falls out after releasing pedal. No return spring in the manual but I DID order a new brake switch, as the old one was beat to hell. Is it possible that the brake switch IS the stop for the brake pedal?? I put the old one back in just to keep it from happening for now. I see lots of gms with brake pedal return springs but I never saw it when I took it apart and the chassis service manual doesn't show any springs or bumper stops. (That clovis pin and rod re assemble was making me see red!!!)
thanks
Lance

The brake pedal has a positive return stop. You want it to be there at rest. Maybe lengthen the pushrod? You don't want the piston bottoming out in the master bore. It should have enough fluid to create a forward stop.

So Fleming, your saying I need the pushrod (with cone ) up against the master cylinder not only snug but tense enough so it is creating pressure against the brake pedal. Which in turn makes cylinder work sooner and not bottoming out. Also not too much pressure which would be making the ms work all the time? I was trying to make brake and clutch pads level Under the dash.
im a newby so sorry.

The brake pedal needs to be against its upper stop when released and the pedal will be higher than the clutch.

You got it. Should be 2 holes in the pedal- 1 manual, 1 power. I can check the FSM when I get home. Who's kit is it?

Rock auto. Hate the shipping fees but they are good at having parts for this old beast! Also have stuff coming from Original auto.

The pushrods may be different between manual and power, is what I'm saying.

The power brake pushrod is built into the power brake booster. The manual brake pushrod has a retainer that holds it into the master cylinder. Does your M/C have this?

Joe! Thanks for that and I can't remember now! I will have to pull that clovis back out and check. Its been awhile but as I sit here you jogged my memory on when I yanked this old ms out Dammit I should have taken pictures. Dumb. I have to travel so I may just order that piece and have it ready when I get back. No way local auto parts will have this. Thanks!!

Just looked. Does NOT infact have this retainer. That explains why the Rod keeps popping out after releasing the Brake! Wow ok makes total sense now. Yet I can NOT find this part online. None of the kits include this retainer with the cone, rod, clovis etc...
anyone with ideas im all ears!
thank you!!
