1972 Cutlass Drum to Disk Upgrade Problem
I just encountered one of the weirdest jury rigging I have ever seen. I bought a used factory disk set-up a couple years back to replace my drums. Everything was assembled and all I had to do was drop it on the ball joints and tie rod ends. After mounting, I decided to check everything so I started to remove the caliper bolts and calipers.
One of the bolts came right off, but the second loosened, and then just turned. I tried to push it out while turning, but no go. After struggling with it for an hour or so, I decided to use a cutoff wheel to cut the bolt. To make a long story short, a small threaded bushing had been spot welded between the caliper ear and the slide bushing and it prevented the bolt from coming out. After a lot of cussing and working with the cut-off wheel again, I removed everything. I ran a tap through the threads on the caliper bracket and they seem fine. I'm just not sure what they were trying to solve. The other 3 bolts on the 2 calipers came out without issue. Is that an old mechanics trick that I am unaware of?
