I'm having a heck of a time figuring this one out.
Brakes are are power front disc/rear drum.
I want to replace the front brake hoses because they look pretty old, and one has split the rubber all around at each end. I also suspect the split one may be starting to collapse internally causing a brake pull to the opposite side. Also, when the wheels are turned all the way to the left or right, the hose on the opposite side is very taught. Is that normal? The hose seems to measure about 11.5" long (rough guess as I didn't remove it to measure.
Based on the brand/casting numbers, are these likely stock calipers?
I can't make out all of the writing on the hoses, but it appears to end in SAE J1401. I've seen some references on auto parts websites that their hoses are based on this number. Is that a part number, a style, or a standard?
A search of the O'Reilly Auto website turns up a hose that they say will fit the front brakes for a 1971 Cutlass, but it doesn't look like mine.
The Rock Auto hose looks like mine. The O'Reilly that I originally found did not, so I was confused about what it was supposed to look like and therefore whether or not my calipers were stock and which website was recommending the correct part.
But now I went back to the O'Reilly site I see that the hose they were recommending for a 1971 Cutlass is actually for front drum, and therefore why it doesn't look like mine. I guess they don't carry one for disc. I basically just confused myself.
If the hose has female threaded fittings at both ends, it's for the drum brakes. I've found at least one vendor who has that labeled incorrectly, by the way.
